Jessica Mullins of Found Herbal

Found Herbal, a serene and fragrant space, opened on Kraft in 2017. It is the natural culmination of owner Jessica Mullins’ extensive study and personal experience with the category. Working as a digital advertising sales representative, deadlines and bottom line ruled her life. Stress manifested itself physically. Unable to find relief Jessica turned to healthy alternatives. Voila, she found her passion.

Jessica, a clinical herbalist, studied Chinese herbalism at the New York Institute of Herbal Medicine & Nutrition and Western herbalism at the Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine. She emphasizes that herbalism is complementary to traditional medicine. It is not a zero-sum game. To assure quality control of the product, Jessica opened a Hastings location in 2019 where Found Herbal products are manufactured, and daily shipments go to clients.

When you are on the right path, progress is quick in all aspects of life. Jessica married in 2018, and baby Althea came along in 2019. Running a business, consulting with clients, and caring for Althea, who is always on the move, should result in a frazzled woman.

Jessica’s calm, healing, radiant tone of voice says otherwise.

Considered an essential business, Found Herbal was open for curbside pick-up and delivery during the shutdown months, but business suffered. Jessica considers the BXV store “her other baby.” “The Bronxville community values its small businesses. They know they make the town unique and special”. Mossy Fern

Cat Fellows and the 3 children.

Plants spilling out the door draw us to Mossy Fern.  How owners Harry and Catherine Fellows met is a quintessential NY story.

In from Los Angeles for 2009 NY Fashion Week, Cat encountered a guest at a party who was, shall we say, persistent. Finding it hard to break away, Cat spotted free-lance fashion photographer Harry and asked him to “pretend” to be her date. They met the next day for a “real” date, and Cat flew off to LA. Six months of telephone conversations led to Cat moving to Williamsburg. Six months after that, they married. Three beautiful children quickly came along. Now, here they are on Kraft. It could be a movie.

Harry has an eye for composition, and he has a green thumb. These talents led him to build terrariums and landscape their Hastings garden. Cat suggested showing the terrariums at Farmers Markets, pop-ups, and street fairs. Lines formed, they sold out. This success led to two storefronts in Hastings in 2019. And then Mossy Fern BXV in January 2020.

During the at-home months of March and April, an e-commerce website was built www.mossyfern.com. Cat, who works full time in finance, keeps the accounts and runs the website. If you see a man driving a Mossy Fern van, that’s Harry. Signage for BXV is planned when they catch their collective breath.

Clearly, in their personal and business lives, Harry and Cat prove the adage that a rolling stone gathers no moss.

Provisions for Pets

Steve Singer

The biggest joy for Steve Singer, co-owner of Provisions for Pets with his wife Phyllis, is playing with the pets that frequent their store on Kraft Avenue. Steve has always had pets -- four-legged, two-legged, furry, feathered, and leathery. His menagerie has included dogs, gerbils, hamsters, rats, iguanas, and even a Partridge in a Pear Tree.

Steve and Phyllis opened their boutique pet supply shop after Steve retired from the New York State Court system in 1999. Luckily the shop stayed open during the pandemic as at-home pet owners needed all manner of treats and pet supplies. Steve was delighted to provide pets just what they needed.

It’s nice to shop at Provisions for Pets and enjoy a chat with Steve or Al, who has worked with Steve for the last 13 years. They know all their customers and their pets. Upon seeing Kerry and her pooch Lucy, Steve remembered they had just returned from Florida. Lucy loves her visits!
