Sep. 24, 2014:
To the Editor:
I was glad to read of the unanimous decision to maintain the brick road from Park Avenue to Wellington.
And, more than that, I was glad that consideration will be given to other brick roads.
If you drive up (or down) Chestnut, you will note that asphalt comes to just below the cut-in of Custer Place. At that point, the citizens (up the hill) stopped the paving. After that, Joe Palumbo put in curbing and the road remained serviceable for many years.
It is now "crowned" in the middle, to the point that cars have to proceed at a snail's pace in order not to scrape their bottoms.
This road badly needs a treatment (perhaps lifting up the cobblestones, restoring the base, and laying them back down), and I hope that this project may be given a high priority.
Thank you,
Robert L. Johnson
Past President of Lawrence Park Hilltop Association
