Letter to the Editor: Wright Elliott on Canceling the Memorial Day Parade

To the Editor:

Jun. 8, 2016:  I went down on Memorial Day to the corner of Pondfield and Midland Avenue and wept. I sat there in my car and wept for Bronxville. I thought of the tens of thousands lost and wounded at Normandy and Okinawa and their families and all the battles to try to preserve this great nation for future generations and then I thought about the people who shop in the rain, play golf in the rain, go to Broadway plays in the rain. You don't need more examples.

Then I thought of the hundreds of people who should be standing here waving flags, hugging their kids, and thanking God and going over in front of the school and hearing words about patriotism and feeling proud to be an American and a citizen of this village.

And I thought about the youngsters now growing up in this village; the parade honoring these memories and these values; this simple act of people marching and wearing their medals and the band playing Sousa.

Canceled!!! Why? Because there's gonna be possibly a "heavy rain." God forbid if a few raindrops hit our heads in the middle of the commemoration.

I know I shouldn't send this, but, if you share any of this, you are the one person who might just be able to awaken a great village out of its inwardness to love and care for a greater America!!!!!

And you know what? I don't give a damn if there might, just might, have been a heavy rain!!!!
