Sep. 4, 2019: The Bronco preseason kicked off with mid-August captains’ practice for the football team, and the Bronco football players ended each day of practice with their traditional workout--sprints up Hawthorne Road. After a week of workouts in the August heat, the players wrapped up captains’ practice taking on the challenge of pushing one of their cars up Hawthorne.

Every Bronco team was out in full force on both Hayes and the newly turfed Chambers Field by the third week of August, and the season opened for the soccer teams before the start of school.

The boys’ soccer team hosted the first round of the Broncofest tournament last Friday and advanced to the final round with a 6-3 win over Tuckahoe. Scoring for the Broncos were Eco Valdez (2G), Will Redman (2G), Luke Doukas (2G, 1A), Theo Liao (1A), and Henry Sheehan (1A). Goalkeeper Liao had seven saves and Nick Bertolizzi had six. Forward Doukas, Liao, and midfielder Jimmy Gallo are captains this year and will lead the team to the final round of the Broncofest on September 14 against Valhalla.

The girls’ soccer team also opened last week, with a 1-0 win over Eastchester in the Eastchester Cup Tournament. Kiki Tormey scored the only goal with an assist from Alex Doukas. It was the third straight year that the Broncos won the tournament. The team, led by captains Maeve Sullivan, Alex Doukas, Vic Ruffo, and Ashley Toal, has fifteen returning players and ten new faces. The Broncos will play their first home game of the season against Pleasantville, a team that is favored to win the Class B title by LoHud.

This week is opening week for most of the fall teams. Today, cross country will go up against Valhalla at Van Cortlandt Park, and field hockey will play their first home game against Hackley at 4:30 pm. On Friday, girls’ tennis will travel to Rye for their first match, and girls' swimming will host Fox Lane at Sarah Lawrence at 4:30 pm.

The football team will play away at Albertus Magnus on Saturday at 1:30 pm.
