By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer

May 22, 2019:  The Bronxville boys’ lacrosse team lost a hard-fought game to Pleasantville in the sectional semifinals on Monday. In the game played at Hayes Field, the No. 1 seeded Broncos fell behind early, trailing 6-1 at the half, but battled back in the second half, tying it up 10-10 with three minutes left. The game went into sudden-death overtime, and the defending state champion Panthers scored first to advance to the Class D Sectional Final. No. 4 Pleasantville will meet No. 2 Briarcliff on Thursday.

The 11-6 Broncos defeated Pleasantville during the regular season, but Class D Section 1 teams are top in the state. Of the four teams playing in the Section 1 Class D semifinals, Briarcliff is ranked No. 2, Bronxville No. 3, Pleasantville No. 5, and Haldane No. 13.

In the sectional quarterfinals, the Broncos defeated No. 9 Putnam Valley 13-5. The Tigers scored and the Broncos found themselves down 2-1 toward the end of the first quarter. Bronxville quickly adjusted and never looked back, winning 13-5. Top scorers were Nate Davis with five goals and Tim Murray with four goals and three assists. Goalie Marco Wimmershoff had eleven saves.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The top-seeded Bronxville girls’ lacrosse team will be playing in the Class D Championship today against No.14 North Salem. The game will be held at Fox Lane High School at 5:00 pm and will be broadcast live on @locallivenet.

The Bronco girls, who are currently ranked No. 1 in the state in Class D, entered the playoffs as the favorite. In the sectional quarterfinals, which were held at Hayes Field last Thursday, the Broncos defeated No. 9 Irvington 17-5. Top scorers in that game were Anneke Pulkkinen, Isabel Sondey, Hanna Bishop, and Kiki Tormey

In the semifinal game against No. 4 Briarcliff on Monday, the Broncos prevailed again, winning by a score of 18-9. Top scorers in that game were Hanna Bishop (5G), Anneke Pulkkinen (3G, 1A), Isabel Sondey (3G,3A), and Caroline Ircha (2G,1A). Goalie Caitlin Mooney and Olivia Shinsato each had two saves.

North Salem advanced to the sectional finals by defeating No. 3 Dobbs Ferry in the quarterfinals and No. 2 Pleasantville 17-16 (OT) in the semis. The Broncos played the Tigers in late April, winning by a score of 18-8, but North Salem was missing top player Grace Curran, who has recently returned from an injury.

Bronxville girls’ lacrosse had made it to the state tournament for many years and were the Class D state runner-up last year.

The Broncos finished the regular season with a win against Keio on Saturday and advanced to the first round of playoffs on Monday. Bronxville, the No. 3 seed, defeated No. 14 Irvington 6-4 in the first round of the Class B Sectionals playoffs.

Pitching for the Broncos was junior Owen Jaquette, who struck out five in six innings and had seven hits and two runs. Zip Malley pitched the seventh inning for the save and had two hits and two RBIs.

The 14-7 Broncos will play in the quarterfinals against No. 11 Albertus Magnus at Scout Field today at 4:30 pm. It is the first time in many years that the Bronxville baseball team has advanced to the second round of playoffs.
