BHS Junior Sofia Ricciarini Wins Second Place in Yonkers Philharmonic Concerto Competition PDF Print Email

Apr. 17, 2019:  Bronxville High School junior Sofia Ricciarini – a talented soprano vocalist and violinist in the high school orchestra – has won second place in the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra’s 41st annual Concerto Competition and earned a spot to perform with the orchestra during a recital on May 18.

Ricciarini, who underwent a rigorous audition process, will perform three arias from different operas: “Una Donna di Quindici anni” from Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, “Vedrai Carino” from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and “V’Adoro Pupille” from Handel’s Giulio Cesare.

“While I play violin in our school orchestra, I’ve never had the opportunity to sing a solo with orchestra accompanying me, so I’m very excited,” Ricciarini said. “It’s an opportunity I’ve always dreamed of having since it’s not something most people get to experience.”

Outside of school, Ricciarini has been studying voice with Sun Young Chang at Concordia Conservatory for a few years but only recently started singing pieces from operas. This summer, she will attend the Tanglewood Music Festival to further study classical voice. Most recently, Ricciarini was a first-place winner in the Rondo Young Artist Festival competition, for which she performed a solo during a recital at Carnegie Hall.

“Sofia is a gifted soprano, concertmistress of the high school orchestra, composer, and music theory scholar,” orchestra director Denise Lutter said. “Her expressive performances are the result of exemplary work within each of the dispositions of the Bronxville Promise. The music faculty is very proud of her achievements and looks forward to her performance with the Yonkers Philharmonic.”

Sponsored by the Fine Arts Orchestral Society, the recital will take place at Saunders Trades & Technical High School in Yonkers on May 18 at 3:00 pm. The Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra, a nonprofit organization, provides free classical concerts to the community and operates through grants and generous contributions.

Books & Culture

Bronxville Public Library

The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.

The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.

The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children.  All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
