Girls’ Soccer Wins 7th Class B Section 1 Sectional Title With a 3-1 Win Over Pleasantville PDF Print Email

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer

Oct. 31, 2018: The Bronxville girls' varsity soccer team, ranked twelfth in the state by the New York Sports Writers Association, knocked out No. 3 Pleasantville in the Class B Sectional Championship held on Sunday at Arlington High School. It was a sweet victory for the Broncos, who had lost to the Panthers 1-0 during the regular season. The Bronco girls are a force in Section 1 and have won the Class B title for seven of the last nine years.

While neither team scored by the end of the first half, both teams had some opportunities. For Bronxville, senior captain Rachael Peacock had a chance with a header off a corner, but unfortunately for the Broncos, the ball went wide. With the score tied 0-0, Coach Don Cupertino had some encouraging words for the team at the half.

"We talked at halftime about how the girls were extremely nervous and had to calm themselves," said long-time coach Cupertino. "I told them that they weren't having any fun and to settle down and make it fun again."

After making a few adjustments to create more scoring opportunities, the Broncos came out and were able to control the majority of the second half. With 23 minutes left on the clock, freshman Kiki Tormey beat the keeper on the lower right side to score the first Bronco goal.

The Broncos scored again four minutes later when Isabel Sondey played a well-placed ball to Catherine Faville, who finished it perfectly. Pleasantville scored its first goal a minute later, but that was the end of scoring for the Panthers. Kunzang Namgyal put an insurance goal on the board with an assist from Maeve Sullivan, giving the Broncos a 3-1 win.

"I believe our level of fitness made a huge difference in the final 20 minutes of the game," said Cupertino.

Freshman goalkeeper Millie Koenig had a great game and made several key saves to keep the ball clear of the net. For her outstanding effort, she was named Player of the Game.

To get to the sectional final game, the Broncos defeated a strong Briarcliff team last Thursday. In the semifinal game, the Bears scored first, but the Broncos answered back within a minute with a goal by Peacock and an assist from Faville. Peacock also scored the game-winning goal to give the Broncos a 2-1 victory.

The varsity team will face Section 9's O'Neill in the regional semifinal today at 5:00 pm at Arlington High School. O'Neill is undefeated in the regular season and is ranked No. 6 in the state.

"This is a great hard working group of girls that has had a wonderful year," said Cupertino. "Hopefully there is more to come."

Go Broncos.
