By Linda Pagano and Joanie Berkery, Members, Bronxville Athletic Council

Apr. 25, 2018:  Karen Peterson, Bronxville athletic director, and Sharon Robinson, girls' varsity lacrosse coach, have been talking about an event to bring the community out in a celebration of lacrosse with back-to-back girls' and boys' varsity lacrosse games for a couple of years, but scheduling both varsity teams to be home and the limitations of field space were huge hurdles to jump.

However, with the christening of the newly constructed Hayes Field in 2017, the hurdles seemed less daunting and, in fact, the new field led to an even greater evolution of a great idea. Add Jane Sears from the Bronxville Athletic Council, an arm of the PTA, and Joanie Berkery, also an Athletic Council member and a Bronxville Youth Lacrosse Association ("BYLA") board member, and the First Annual Bronxville LaxFest was born.

What better way to celebrate a love of lacrosse than with an event that includes the breadth of players from youth to high school, girls and boys, all playing on fields side by side. An obvious choice for such an event was during Spirit Week, a springtime homecoming for The Bronxville School and community. This Saturday, April 28, the players will take the fields for the first-ever Annual Bronxville LaxFest 2018.

The high school games kick off on Chambers Field with the boys' JV team at 10:00 am. The boys' varsity team takes the field at noon, and the varsity girls follow at 2:00 pm for the premier events of the day. The JV girls' game will follow the varsity game.

The BYLA coaches are encouraging all youth players to come out and watch these high school games to see great lacrosse in action and to support the high school players, who volunteer their time to the fall and winter youth clinics.

The youth event sponsored by BYLA in coordination with DYLA (Darien) features lacrosse games beginning at 8:30 am and running until late afternoon. Hayes Field will host youth games against corresponding teams from Darien.

All teams will be running Yards for Yeardley in honor of Yeardley Love to collectively achieve 1,000,000 yards. To add to the excitement, BYLA will be raffling off collegiate lacrosse gear from BYLA alums and holding a silent auction for one-on-one lessons with current collegiate and professional players who got their lax start with BYLA. These alums are generously donating their time and college team gear because they want to give back to the organization that set them off on their lacrosse careers.  Jack Near, top short-stick defensive midfielder Notre Dame captain and #7 MLL draft pick, will be donating a Dallas Rattlers helmet and gloves and a one-hour private session. Other donations include a private lesson with Lily Grass, attack for Michigan; Ellie Walsh, midi for Cornell; Mason Warble, midi for Brown; and Ara Atayan, attack for UNC; more are in the works. Funds raised will benefit the continuing efforts of BYLA programs.

A food truck fairway will be in the teachers parking lot on Meadow adjacent to Chambers and Hayes Fields. The food trucks will be Abeetz Pizza, Craig's Hot Dog, Three Little Pigs BBQ, and Root & Vine Smoothie Stand. The Bronco Barn & Grill concession stand will also be open with all your favorite candy, snacks, and drinks, and a bake sale will be held.

Please come out and support all the teams, One Love, and BYLA, and enjoy a great day of lacrosse.
