Superb Cellist to Perform at Bronxville Library Sunday, May 6 PDF Print Email

alt

By Irena Choi Stern, Publicity Chair, Friends of the Bronxville Library

Apr. 25, 2018:  Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “representing the young, up-and-coming generation” and a “superb cellist with a large, expressive, singing tone, passionate musicianship, and magnificent playing” by the Journal Tribune, Armenian-American cellist Ani Kalayjian will perform on Sunday, May 6, at 3:00 pm in the Yeager Room of the Bronxville Public Library, an event sponsored by the Friends of the Bronxville Public Library (FOBPL).

“This is just one of the many ways the Friends of the Bronxville Public Library supports the library, sponsoring special projects, events and securing materials that are beyond the reach of the regular library budget,” said Margaret Mager, president of the Friends board. “Our volunteer board works hard to raise funds for services that are helpful to this beloved 105-year-old institution.”

Kalayjian made several trips to Lebanon serving as principal cellist of the Lebanese Philharmonic for multiple concerts given at the American University of Beirut and performing solo concerts at Haigazian University, where she performed the world premiere of Yesterday is No More, which was written for her and violinist Rebecca Jackson by award-winning composer Polina Nazakinskaya. During her time in Lebanon, Ani gave outreach performances to underserved communities at St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Insan School for Iraqi & Syrian refugee children, Byblos Birds’ Nest Armenian orphanage, and the Karagheusian Foundation and in the Syrian refugee camps.

An avid teaching artist, Ani is on the faculty of the Elisabeth Morrow School and Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood, New Jersey, and enjoys giving masterclasses to musicians around the country. She has also been on faculty at the Horace Mann School.

Ani received an MA with Distinction from the Royal Northern College of Music in England as a student of Ralph Kirshbaum and a BA from the Mannes College of Music as a student of Timothy Eddy.

The event will be followed by a reception. It is free and open to the public ($5 suggested donation at the door). For more information, go to http://bronxvillelibrary.org/events/violin-cello-duo-concert-by-ani-kalayjian/.

Books & Culture

Bronxville Public Library

The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.

The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.

The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children.  All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
