Jul. 5, 2017: Westchester and Putnam County high school athletes received all-star recognition from the Journal News this past week.
Twenty Broncos were recognized with first or second team honors, and three were awarded honorable mention recognition. All-stars are chosen from Westchester and Putnam public and private schools of all sizes.
Only twelve girls from across Westchester and Putnam were named to the lacrosse first team, and three Broncos made the list. Two-time All-American Ellie Walsh was named player of the year and was joined on the first team by Olivia Jensen and Mason Warble. This year's lacrosse team won the Class D sectional and regional titles and made it to the state final game before losing in overtime to Skaneateles.
Bronxville coaches Sharon Robinson and Jim Mitchell were each named coach of the year. Robinson, in her 10th year of coaching girls' lacrosse at Bronxville, has led the Broncos to the state tournament for the past four years.
Mitchell, who just completed his 38th year of coaching girls' track at Bronxville, shared the coach of the year award with New Rochelle's coach, Andy Capellan. This spring, Mitchell's team won its 20th consecutive Class C championship and won three Division 2 state championship medals in the 800m, the 4x400m relay, and the 4x800m relay.
