Broncos Honored at Spring Sports Awards Evening 2017 PDF Print Email

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer

Jun. 21, 2017:  At the spring sports awards evening held on June 6, Bronxville athletes were recognized with league, sectional, and national honors. The Bronxville teams and individual Broncos had some pretty impressive results this spring. Athletes were presented with 67 All-League awards and 20 All-Section awards, and seven Bronco athletes were named All-American or Academic All-American.

The Broncos put in a lot of time and effort to achieve such impressive results. Athletic director Karen Peterson recognized their success, but she also reminded them that athletic competition is about more than winning.

"I hope you will think about some of the rewards--your friends, your commitment to teammates and coaches, the fundraising--and I hope you will remember being a Bronco with great fondness."

With help from the members of the Athletic Council, parent volunteers, and advisors Matt Fisher and Anthony Vaglica, the Broncos put together a big fundraising effort in the 2016-2017 season, raising $15,000 for a variety of charities. A special award was presented to parent volunteer Nonie Flannery, who supported the Athletic Council events and activities for more than a decade as her six children attended The Bronxville School. Peterson congratulated Flannery by noting that she has likely sold about 8,000 hot dogs in her illustrious career, each one with love.

At the end of each school year, an award is given to a senior boy and a senior girl to recognize their athletic skills, sportsmanship, and leadership. This year, three-sport athletes Kaitlin Ryan and Ellie Walsh shared the Virginia Landis Award, and Athletic Council co-president Jack Reilly won the Lou Brinsmade Award. Ryan, one of the most decorated runners in Bronxville's track program, has won 12 gold medals at states and will run for Stanford in the fall, and Walsh, captain of the field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse teams, will play lacrosse at Cornell. Reilly, captain of the football and basketball teams, was All-League in football and All-League and All-Conference in basketball.

Two Bronxville lacrosse players were named All-American, Walsh and Mason Warble, and four were named Academic All-American, Beth Finley, Ara Atayan, James Swartz, and Jason Cushman.

Also named All-American for the 2016-2017 season was Harry Charlton, a freshman who played No. 1 for the Bronxville varsity squash team. Harry was nominated by the FairWest League and the Westchester and Fairfield public school league based on level of play throughout the season as well as US Squash rating and ranking.
