Sarah Lawrence College to Present Speaker on the Refugee Crisis February 17 PDF Print Email

By Judith Schwartzstein, Vice President for Publicity, Sarah Lawrence College

Feb. 15, 29017:   Want to learn more about the current refugee crisis?

On Friday, February 17, at 5:00 pm in Miller Lecture Hall, author and professor of African studies at Oxford University Jonny Steinberg will be on campus to discuss his most recent book, A Man of Good Hope.

Steinberg, a Rhodes Scholar and the author of seven books, is a two-time winner of South Africa's most prestigious literary prize, the Sunday Times Alan Paton Award, and was an inaugural winner of the Windham-Campbell Prize for Literature awarded by Yale University.

A Man of Good Hope is the remarkable true story of a Somali refugee's journey across Africa, a narrative that speaks to the suffering and resilience of refugees throughout the world. Steinberg peels back the layers of Asad Abdullahi's story, laying bare the humanity and situating Abdullahi's story within the political and social upheavals of Steinberg's native South Africa.

The book has been adapted by South Africa's Isango Ensemble into a musical playing this month at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).

The Miller Lecture Hall is in the Titsworth Building on the Sarah Lawrence College campus. For more information, call 914-395-2412.

Bronxville Public Library

Bronxville Public Library

The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.

The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.

The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children.  All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
