Bronxville Bronco Update: Bronco Teams Lead Section 1

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer

May 6, 2015:  This year the Bronco teams have continued to establish themselves as leaders in Section 1. The boys' golf and tennis teams are undefeated; the boys' and girls' lacrosse teams are ranked first in Class B; and the girls' track team continues to be a force against schools of all sizes. Below is a look at how they fared last week.

Boys' Lacrosse

Last week the 9-3 Broncos defeated Irvington 17-3 and Mahopac 8-4 and maintained their no. 2 spot in the Lohud power rankings, right behind Yorktown. In the no. 3 spot is Class B Pleasantville, who handed the Broncos a loss earlier in the season. With playoffs starting next week, Bronxville and Pleasantville are the top-rated Class B teams.

"If the team is set to make another run, it will inevitably have to go through Pleasantville first," said Coach Tim Horgan. "However, heading into the playoffs we cannot look past any opponent. Briarcliff is a much-improved squad from when we played them earlier in the year, and Irvington plays a tough zone defense, which can throw a team off on any given day. We are going to have to play with high intensity moving forward and with a sense of urgency, because come next week, it's win or go home."

The Broncos will play their final regular season home game against Blind Brook on Thursday and will play Fordham Prep away on Saturday.

Golf

In the last week, the boys' golf team beat Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Ardsley, Blind Brook, and Hastings to bring their record to 10-0. In the match held yesterday at Pelham Country Club, the Broncos defeated Blind Brook and tied Pelham. In that match, Connor Daly and Matt Bettino finished tied for first with a score of 39. There are seven matches left in the season before sectionals. "Scarsdale is definitely our main competition," commented captain Connor Daly. "We play them head-to-head on May 11th."

Girls' Track and Field

In a field of 36 schools across Westchester and Putnam Counties, the Bronxville girls' team took second place overall at the Somers Invitational held last Friday and Saturday. Highlights from the meet include Kaitlin Ryan's 4:34.08 first-place finish in the 1500m, giving her a personal best and the fastest time in New York State this year.

The Bronxville relays were once again scoring powerhouses for the Broncos. The varsity sprint medley (Laura HollandCaroline DePaulSophie Kohlhoff, and Kaitlin Ryan) finished first in 4:10.58, and the 4x1600m team (Olivia ScottiDelia HayesCarlie Hoffer, and Hilary Rizzo) placed first with a time of 22.05.83.

Baseball

On Monday, the boys snapped a four-game losing streak by beating Solomon Schechter 15-9 in eight innings. Senior Owen Balsiero led the Broncos at the plate and closed out the game on the mound.
