Bronco Sports Update: Playoff Season Begins

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer

May 20, 2015:  It is an intense week for Bronxville High School athletes. Playoffs began last week for the lacrosse teams, and this week, golf, tennis, and baseball sectionals begin. Below is a look at how the teams have fared.

Boys' Lacrosse

The boys' lacrosse team easily defeated Keio 23-3 and Westlake 16-6 in the early rounds of the playoffs. In the semifinal game against Briarcliff yesterday, the Broncos defeated the Bears 9-5 with Michael Crawford and Gerry Frost each scoring twice in the second quarter. The Broncos head to the Section 1 Championship game on Thursday at White Plains at 3:00 pm. Number-two Bronxville will play number-one Pleasantville for the Class C title. These two teams met in the sectional finals last year, and Bronxville came up with a 9-7 victory. Pleasantville earned its number-one ranking this year after defeating Bronxville during the regular season.

Girls' Lacrosse

The girls' lacrosse team sailed through the early rounds of playoffs, with wins over Pleasantville and Briarcliff in the opening rounds. In the semifinal game held yesterday against Hendrik Hudson, the score was 9-6 at halftime, but the Bronco defense made some adjustments and the team allowed only two goals in the second half to win the game 18-8. Lilly Grass scored six for the Broncos, and Mason Warble scored five. The girls' team moved up to number six in the Lohud power rankings this week and is the number-one seed in Class C. The Broncos head to the Section 1 Championship game on Thursday at Torne Valley Sports Complex in Suffern.

Tennis

The entire boys' tennis team headed to conferences on Monday after defeating Sleepy Hollow in the team championships. The Bronco team, which finished the season as undefeated league champions, won all five matches against the Horsemen. At conferences, Jimmy Purdy finished first in the singles competition and Robbie Simon finished second; Ferdinand Schmuck and Julian McCarthy took first place in doubles. The sectional tournament runs Tuesday through Friday at Harrison High School.

Golf

In the sectional meet held at Waccabuc Country Club on Monday, three Broncos advanced to the final round. Connor Daly finished first for the Broncos with a 75 and is currently tied for seventh place. Matt Bettino (76) is tied for eleventh, and Chris Gay (78) is tied for nineteenth. The final round will be held at Fenway Golf Club in Scarsdale today. The top nine qualifiers will advance to the New York State Championships.

Baseball

The Broncos finished the regular season with a five-game winning streak, and in the final game held last Wednesday, Bronxville defeated Edgemont 9-3 with solid pitching by Jack Braumuller and Owen Balseiro. The first round of the playoffs begins on Thursday. The 11-9 Broncos are seeded tenth and play away at number-seven Putnam Valley.

Go Broncos.
