Bronco Football Defeats Edgemont in Triple Overtime; Updates on Soccer and Field Hockey

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer

Sep. 9, 2015:  The Bronxville School opened yesterday, but the high school athletes began their season last week in the heat. Chambers Field, which is usually busy with team practices, was empty during the worst of last week's heat wave. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) requires that games and practices be cancelled if the heat index is above 96 degrees. To deal with temperatures in the low to mid-90s, game start times were delayed until 5:00 pm, and teams were required to take water breaks every 15 minutes.

There was some relief from the dangerous heat and humidity for Saturday's opening football game. The Broncos traveled to Edgemont to meet their first Class B opponent, having moved up from Class C this year. The Broncos earned their first win of the season by defeating the Panthers in a thrilling triple overtime 14-7 victory, with senior co-captain Anthony Napolitano scoring the first touchdown during regulation time and scoring the winning touchdown in the third overtime. Napolitano had 15 carries and rushed for 131 yards, and Jack Gelinas ran for 123 yards on 19 carries. Two extra points were added by senior Sam Connors, who also had a strong day on defense and receiving.

Quarterback Brian DePaul threw for over 100 yards in his first varsity start. Senior co-captain Tim Weir anchored on the offensive line. Senior captains Tucker Duncan and Gelinas led the defense, holding the Panthers to only one touchdown. Adding to the defensive effort was sophomore Dylan James in his first varsity game.

Edgemont threatened to score in overtime but missed a field goal and gave the Broncos a window of opportunity to score in the third overtime. In Edgemont's final possession, an interception by Bronxville junior Arman Vranka ended the game in dramatic fashion.

Bronxville plays away at Nanuet next week at 3:00 pm. The Nanuet Golden Knights, who defeated Ardsley 14-7 in the opening week, are ranked first in Class B by lohud.com.

All of the "turf" teams are off to a good start, with a total of five wins and one tie during opening week. See below for last week's results of girls' and boys' soccer and field hockey.

Boys' Soccer

The boys' soccer team had two wins last week over Tuckahoe and North Salem. Leading the team are senior captains Sam Aherne and Joe Pepe. Aherne, a five-year varsity starter, was named to the lohud "Elite 11" last week. The Elite 11 includes the top 11 soccer players in all of Section 1. The Broncos are ranked second in Class B behind number-one-ranked Rye Neck.

Girls' Soccer

The girls' soccer team, which won the Class B state championship in 2014, is off to a good start this fall. In their first game, the Broncos defeated Blind Brook 2-0 with goals by Mason Warble and Natalie Kister. The Class B girls' team, led by captains Taylor Sears, Fallon Raviol, and Charlotte Schmuck, is ranked fifth in all of Section 1 by lohud.com.

Field Hockey

The field hockey team had a great run in the Class C playoffs last year, making it all the way to the state semifinals. This season the team moved up to Class B and will face many new opponents. The team, led by captains Brennan O'TooleLilly Grass, and Caroline DePaul, opened last week with a 1-1 tie against Valhalla and a 7-2 win over Briarcliff. Yesterday the team suffered a 6-3 loss to Scarsdale.
