Broncos Honored at Winter Sports Awards Ceremony

By S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer

Mar. 16, 2016: At the annual winter sports awards ceremony held last Wednesday, March 9, Athletic Council co-presidents Taylor Sears and Matt Bettino introduced the varsity teams and spoke about the winter season.

Sears praised the accomplishments of the winter sports teams, noting that several teams won league and sectional championships. The boys' indoor track and field team won its tenth consecutive league championship, while the girls' team won its thirty-sixth league and twentieth sectional championship. The squash team capped off a great season by capturing its first league championship in the FairWest Cup Tournament. Sears also pointed out that for the first time in Bronco history, the boys' and girls' basketball teams both made the playoffs and hosted home playoff games on the same night.

Sears also spoke about the success of the winter teams that have members from other schools as well as Bronxville. The New Rochelle-Bronxville swim team sent three Bronxville swimmers to the state championships, and the Bronxville-New Rochelle ski team had six racers qualify for sectionals. The Eastchester-Bronxville-Edgemont ice hockey team had a slow start but ended the season with a winning streak.

The Athletic Council worked hard this winter to encourage school spirit. Bettino noted that the basketball teams hosted fan games for the entire Bronxville School, encouraging elementary students to come out and support the team. The council also spearheaded the sixth man group, bringing fans and school spirit to every home basketball game. Bronco teams and the Athletic Council participated in fundraising events for autism awareness, Hoops for Heroes, the Zoë B. Klimley Scholarship Fund, and Elizabeth's Hope.

It was an all-around great season for the Bronxville School athletes; nine Broncos were awarded all-section honors, forty-two were given all-league awards, and eleven received all-league, honorable mention, recognition.

Athletic director Karen Peterson thanked all those involved in the winter sports season, including members of the Athletic Council, parent volunteers, school staff, and, most important, the coaches.

"Thank you to the coaching staff," said Peterson. "I know how hard you work and how much you care. Your dedication is truly appreciated."
