Jun. 7, 2017:  Bronxville High School athletes will head to the New York State Championships this coming weekend. The girls' lacrosse team will compete in the state semifinals after winning the regional championship last Saturday, and nine members of the Bronxville track and field team will compete in six events.

The girls' lacrosse team brought home its fourth consecutive regional championship after defeating Section 2's Millbrook in the regional finals. In the game held at Suffern Middle School, the Bronco girls scored three goals in the opening minute of the game and went on to easily defeat the Wildcats 15-4. Seniors Olivia Jensen, Mason Warble, Lucy Hanrahan, Beth Finley, Ellie Walsh, and Sophia Anagnostakis teamed up to score 10. The 19-1 Broncos are ranked No. 1 in the state in Class D according to Laxpower.

While the lacrosse team has competed in the state tournament for the last three years, it has never made it past the semifinals. Last year it played a close game against Skaneateles but lost 11-10 in overtime. This year just might be its opportunity. The Broncos have an experienced squad, including nine seniors, four of whom have played on the big stage of the state tournament for the past three years.

The lacrosse team will play Mattituck-Southold on Friday at 2:00 pm at SUNY Cortland and, if successful, will play against the winner of Palmyra-Macedon/Skaneateles on Saturday at 2:00 pm.

At the Section 1 Track and Field State Qualifiers held last weekend, eight Bronxville girls and one boy qualified for the state championships. For the boys' team, Alex Rizzo qualified in two events. He will be competing in the 800m after placing first at the state qualifiers with a time of 1:56, and he will also run in the 3000m steeplechase with a first-place finish and a state-qualifying time of 9:49.71.

The Bronco girls' track team seems to peak at the perfect time. Members of the girls' team will be competing in three individual races and three relays.

Senior Kaitlin Ryan will make her fifth trip to the outdoor state championships after winning the 800m in 2:09.06. Other individual competitors include Margot Richards and Sabrina Mellinghoff. Richards, who placed first at qualifiers in the 100m, set a new Bronxville School record of 12.63; Mellinghoff also broke a school record in the 200m, finishing in 25.42.

Bronxville relay teams are consistent competitors at states, and this year is no exception. The Broncos swept the relays at the state qualifiers and will compete in the 4x100m, 4x400m, and 4x800m relays this coming weekend. The 4x100m relay team, Richards, Mellinghoff, Alisa Kanganis, and Sophie Kohlhoff, had an exceptional performance at qualifiers, setting a new Bronxville School record of 50.29.  Eve Balsiero, Caroline Brashear, Laura Holland, and Kaitlin Ryan will compete at states in two relays, the 4x400m and the 4x800m. States will take place at Union-Endicott High School in Vestal on Friday and Saturday.

Go Broncos.
