Jan. 31, 2018:  It was a one-two finish in 1000m for Alex and Matt Rizzo at the Westchester County Championships. Alex finished in 2:30.02, barely edging out his twin brother, Matt, who finished in 2:30.30. It was the first indoor county title for Alex. Jack Kochansky finished tenth in the 1000m in 2:43.18. All three ran season-best times.

Ethan Waggoner, Jack Kochansky, Alex Rizzo, and Matt Rizzo teamed up in the 4x800m, placing second in a season-best time of 8:28:55. Also having a season-best race was Seamus Watters, who placed fourth in the 55m hurdles (8:38). Avery Kane placed third in the shot put with a throw of 40-11.5.

The Bronxville girls’ relay teams have historically had unprecedented success at the county level, and this year was no different. The 4x400m team, Eve Balseiro, Sabrina Mellinghoff, Caroline Brashear, and Laura Holland, won the county title with a time of 4:05.94, and the 4x800m team, Patty Haggerty, Gigi Chrappa, Emma Mandanas, and Natalie Weiner, also won a county title, with a time of 9:46.69. The 4x200m team, Caroline Ircha, Grace Randall, Ava Black, and Alisa Kanganis, had a season-best time of 1:51.45, placing fourth.

In the 3000m, Natalie Weiner placed second in 3:01.40, according her tenth all-time for Bronxville. In the 600m, Caroline Brashear placed second (1:36.55) and Laura Holland placed fourth (1:37.64), giving them the honor of having, respectively, the third- and fifth-fastest Bronxville times ever. In the 300m race, Eve Balseiro placed fourth (42:00).

The Westchester County Championship includes schools of all sizes, and the Bronxville girls held their own among 35 schools, placing third overall. The only two schools to outperform Bronxville were New Rochelle (1st)  and Ursuline (2nd).

Ice Hockey

The Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville/Edgemont ("ETBE") ice hockey team had a full schedule, playing three games in one week. The team had a convincing 8-3 win against Fox Lane in an away game on January 14. In that game, Leo Gretzinger scored three goals and had three assists, and Matthew Luna had a hat trick.

On January 19, fans dressed up in red, white, and blue for a rematch with Fox Lane at home. It was a very spirited evening. The cheering fans were all dressed up in USA-themed attire, but ETBE came up short, losing 5-4. In that game, senior Aidan Denning and freshman Kyle Dillon each scored for the first time as varsity players.

The day after the loss to Fox Lane, ETBE beat a strong Pearl River team, 1-0. Gretzinger scored off a great feed from Luna, with a second assist from Denning. J.P. Rosabella, a freshman, played a great game in the net, posting his first shutout.

Boys’ Swimming

The New Rochelle-Bronxville swim team placed third at the Conference 1 Championships last week. Undefeated Horace Greeley placed first, with 430 points, and John Jay-Brewster took second place, with 271, edging out New Rochelle-Bronxville by just 8 points. Conference 1 is the most competitive swim conference in Section 1.

Andrew Babyak, Tim Cushman, Finn Seibold, and New Rochelle swimmer Michael Lawson will be headed to states after placing first and swimming NYS-qualifying times in their respective events. Lawson, Cushman, Seibold, and Babyak won both the 200 free relay (1:29.05) and the 400 free relay (3:15.57) and will be competing at states in early March.

Babyak, who won a state gold in the 500 free last year, placed first at conferences in both the 200 free (1:44.74) and the 500 free (4:41.37). Cushman had two first-place finishes: the 100 free (47.06) and the 100 backstroke (52.27). Lawson placed first in the 50 free (22.37) and placed second in the 100 free (48.14). Mark Sears placed seventh in the 1m diving, and Zach Flangos placed 10.

Basketball

Bronxville defeated Haldane in the 4th Annual Hoops for Heroes event held at Croton Harmon High School this past weekend. Korean war veteran Joseph Molloy, grandfather of current varsity player Liam Bishop, was named the honorary team captain for the game, and the Broncos raised over $2,000 for the event. Bronxville was down 33-26 at the end of the third quarter but turned it around in the fourth to win 41-40 at the buzzer. Alston Tarry was the high scorer, with 23 points.
