May 2, 2018:  The Bronco schedule was jam-packed last week with all teams celebrating Bronco Spirit Week. The athletes were busy with games and practices but still made time for fundraising activities.

The first annual Bronco Laxfest was held on Saturday. It was an all-day lacrosse festival that raised money for One Love, a foundation with the goal of educating young people about healthy and unhealthy relationships. Money was raised through concession and bake sales, t-shirt sales, and food truck dining. In addition, the Bronxville Youth Lacrosse Association (BYLA) raised $2,700 in a raffle where many Bronxville lacrosse alums donated their time for lessons or gear from their college teams.

Sharon Robinson, coach of the girls’ varsity lacrosse team and vice chair of the One Love Foundation, was glad the weather cooperated and happy that the community came out to enjoy the day and support the teams.

“Thank you to BYLA, the Athletic Council, and specifically Joanie Berkery and Karen Peterson for their dedication to making the day so special,” said Robinson. “The day was absolutely wonderful.”

The Bronxville girls’ lacrosse team had four games during Spirit Week, finishing the week 3-1. They had three consecutive wins against league opponents, including a 17-1 win over Edgemont, a 15-11 win over top-ranked North Salem, and a narrow 9-8 victory over Putnam Valley, a Class D team ranked No. 3 in the LoHud Power Rankings. The Broncos are ranked No. 2.

During the Bronco Laxfest, the girls’ team lost 14-5 to Summit High School, a tough team from New Jersey that is ranked No. 3 in the state. The Class D Broncos have lost only one other game this season, which was to Long Island’s Northport, the top-ranked Class A school in New York State.

The boys’ lacrosse team had a 14-8 win over Briarcliff and a 10-5 win over Putnam Valley during Spirit Week but lost 9-6 to New Jersey’s Bridgewater-Raritan on Saturday. On Wednesday during the Putnam Valley game, the boys’ team raised money for Janada L. Batchelor Foundation /Mainsprings, a charity committed to alleviating poverty in East Africa through education, improved health care, and economic sustainability.

The boys’ team moved to the No. 10 ranking in the LoHud Power Rankings this week and will play No. 3 Pleasantville away on Thursday.

The baseball team raised money for Believe in Brynn, a charity affiliated with the Rett Syndrome Research Trust. The Broncos had a big 14-1 win over Solomon Schechter last Wednesday and a 4-3 win over Irvington on Monday. Pitcher Owen Jaquette had the win for the Broncos in the Irvington game and Theo Sperber had the save.

Finally, members of the track and field team headed to Philadelphia to participate in the historic Penn Relays, the longest uninterrupted collegiate track meet in the country. The girls’ 4x800m relay team placed 3rd in 9:20:55 with Natalie Weiner running the first leg in 2:19.32, followed by Patty Haggerty in 2:20.03, Laura Holland in 2:21.95, and Caroline Brashear in 2:19.26. The girls’ time in the 4x800m race on Thursday qualified them for the Championship of America race on Friday, where they finished 11th.

“To get into the Championship race is a significant accomplishment,” said Coach Jim Mitchell, “and hopefully they can use it to achieve bigger and better results as the season progresses.”

The girls’ 4x400m relay, Eve Balseiro, Rachael Peacock, Caroline Brashear, and Laura Holland, placed 9th for small schools in 4:02.48. The Bronxville 4x800m is No. 1 in Section 1, and the 4x400m is No. 2, just behind New Rochelle.

The Bronxville boys’ 4x400m relay also competed at Penn Relays. Matt Rizzo (52.68), Seamus Watters (54.94), Tommy O’Connell (53.75), and Alex Rizzo (52.42) combined to run a 3:33.77, placing 6th for small schools.

It is a full schedule again this week, especially for girls’ lacrosse and baseball. Both of those teams have four games in the next seven days.

Go Broncos.
