Bronxville Field Hockey and Boys’ Soccer Teams Win Sectional Titles; Girls’ Swimming Qualifies for States

Nov. 6, 2019: The turf fields were non-stop action last week as the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams and the field hockey team had home-field advantage in the sectional playoffs. Remarkably, all three teams advanced to the sectional finals, which is quite a feat for any school but especially for a small school like Bronxville.
By the end of the weekend, the boys’ soccer team and the field hockey team won their respective sectional championships, but the girls’ soccer team lost to Pleasantville, the top-ranked team in the state.
Nine girls from the Bronxville-Tuckahoe swimming and diving team competed in the two-day sectional meet this week. After Monday’s preliminaries, five girls qualified for states in four events. Tuckahoe senior Emily Gjersten qualified in the 200 and 500yd free, and Gjersten, along with Bronxville teammates Ellie Dessart, Keala Schubert, Julia Bazinet and Caroline McGrath qualified in the 200yd and 400yd free relays.
The No. 3 Broncos won the Class B Section 1 Championship with a win over top-seeded Hastings. In the game held at Lakeland on Saturday, the backline line, Luke Freeman, Liam Sands, Aidan Sulimirski, Casey McKhann, and Chris Aherne, played outstanding defense holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless. The midfield, Jimmy Gallo, Griffen Patterson, Will Redman, and Jack Bodell also played an important part in controlling the Hastings playmakers.
Senior Captain Luke Doukas scored first for the Broncos assisted by Will Redman, and Henry Sheehan contributed the second goal of the day with an assist by Doukas. Theo Liao made nine saves in the 2-0 shutout. The last time the Broncos won a Sectional Championship was in 2010.
In the semifinal game against Pleasantville held at Chambers Field last Wednesday, the Broncos took a 1-0 lead late in the first half with a goal by Doukas (assisted by McKhann), but Pleasantville evened the score in the second half. The Broncos lost 2-0 Burke Catholic last night in the regional semifinals at Hendrik Hudson High School. They finish the season with a 14-5-1 record.
After losing to North Salem last year in the Class C semifinals, the Broncos came out determined to win the 2019 Sectional Championship. They dominated North Salem in the first half, scoring two goals in the first eleven minutes, and then held the Tigers scoreless for the remainder of the game, securing a 2-0 win.
Julia Widen & Holly Ungvary scored for the Broncos with assists by Hanna Bishop, Olivia Gunther, and Sunday Ladas. Goalie Caitlin Mooney had one save.

In the Broncos march to the sectional final, they defeated Croton 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Albertus Magnus 5-1 in the semis. In last Wednesday’s game against the Falcons, Bronxville goals were scored by Ladas (2), Ungvary, Gunther, and Widen with assists by Ungvary, Widen, and Bishop. Mooney had two saves.

The Broncos head to the regional finals on Saturday and will play Section 9’s Taconic Hills at Lakeland High School. The state semifinals will be held at Williamsville North High School on November 16th.
The girls’ soccer team made it to the sectionals finals by defeating Rye Neck in the quarterfinals and Briarcliff in the semis. In the game against Briarcliff held last Thursday at Chambers Field, Lily Jebejian, Alex Doukas, and Maeve Sullivan scored for the Broncos in the 3-0 shut out.
The tables were turned in the Class B Section 1 Championship game on Sunday at Arlington High School, a talented Pleasantville team jumped out to an early lead and captured the sectional title with a 3-0 win over the Broncos.

The Section 1 Swimming and Diving Championships commenced on Monday, and ten girls from the Bronxville-Tuckahoe team were qualifiers: Eileen Marshall, Emily Gjersten, Julia Bazinet, Ellie Dessart, Caroline McGrath, Keala Schubert, Julia Reich, Allie Gjersten, Fiona Barr and Kayla Tatarian.

In the preliminaries held on Monday, Tuckahoe senior Emily Gjersten placed first in the 500yd free in a NYS qualifying time of 4:53.00 and finished 4th in the 200yd free (1:53.49 NYS). Gjersten placed second in the 500yd free at states last year and will swim for Duke in the fall.
Two Bronxville-Tuckahoe relays qualified for the state championships. The 200yd free (Schubert, Bazinet, Dessart, and Gjersten) placed 5th in 1:41.42, and the 400yd free (Bazinet, Dessart, McGrath, and Gjersten) placed 6th in 3:40.91.
The Section 1 Championships were completed last night, and the New York State Championships will take place at Ithaca College on November 22nd and 23rd.
