Apr. 14, 2021: It has been an unusual year for Bronxville School sports with delayed start times, scheduling changes and the formation of an entirely new “fall” season. The varsity, junior varsity, and modified football teams are in the midst of the Fall 2 season, and the spring season, which typically would start in March, will get underway on Monday.

With three football teams and four lacrosse teams needing practice time next week, field space will be at a premium. Fortunately, the longer days will allow the lacrosse teams to take the field from 3:15-5 and the football teams to practice 5:30-7:30.

The varsity football team sits on top of Class C with a 4-0 record. The Broncos picked up a 38-0 win against Tuckahoe on April 1st, and defeated Woodlands 41-15 on Saturday.

In the game against Woodlands, the Broncos took a 20-0 lead with rushing touchdowns by Teddy Dolan and Will Murray and another score by Johnny Moynihan. Tashaan Lewis put Woodlands on the board with a five-yard run, and then with just one minute left in the half, Woodlands’ Kevin Leak scored on an 85-yard fumble return. A successful two-point conversion narrowed the Bronco lead to just five points.

In the second half, the Broncos turned it on and scored three more times with two touchdowns by Henry Donohue and one by Connor Randall. The impressive Bronco defense held the Falcons scoreless.

The varsity team will play at Blind Brook on Saturday at 1:30. There are no playoffs this year, and the Broncos final game will be at home against Rye Neck on April 24th. For those athletes who play both football and lacrosse, it will be a very busy spring.

The junior varsity team had a 26-7 win over Nanuet on April 1st, but had a disappointing loss to Westlake on Saturday. The Broncos were down 20-0 at halftime, but despite a great comeback in the second half, they lost 26-20. The JV team has one game left on Saturday at Hendrik Hudson.

The modified football team played their season opener at home on April 8th. The Broncos scored six touchdowns (Rooney, Frigon, Zarba, Gravier, Wortel and Martinelli), and the Bronco defense held the Yellowjackets scoreless. The modified team has two more games: one today at home against Tuckahoe and their final game at Croton Harmon on April 22nd.

The Bronxville football program has over 100 athletes participating this spring. During normal times, the teams are usually big, but this year the new schedule has allowed soccer and ice hockey players the opportunity to play spring football.

Practice for spring sports starts on Monday, and the spring season officially begins on April 26th with a track meet and a girls’ lacrosse game.

Go Broncos.
