School Supply Packets (More than 1,000) Ready for Students To Pick Up at Value Drugs

valuedrugsformatted

August 24, 2011:  Here's one sure sign that fall and a new school year are on the horizon--school supply packets for Bronxville elementary and middle school students--numbering in the thousands!--are ready for pick-up at Value Drugs in Bronxville.

The Bronxville PTA, teachers at The Bronxville School, and Value Drugs have been partnering for four years now to prepare the school supply packets for students.  By participating in the program, students will start the school year with all the supplies they need and teachers will be assured that students will come to class with the proper materials for the year's work.  Best of all--parents will enjoy the ease of ordering packets by grade level and teacher name.

Value Drugs began taking orders for the 2011-2012 supply packets in May.  The store accepted online orders until June 29 and in-store orders until August 1.  "When the program began we made about four hundred packets," store manager Mike Carugan said.  "Now it's up in the thousands."

In addition to serving The Bronxville School, Value Drugs prepares school supply packets for Immaculate Conception School, The Chapel School, and schools in Eastchester, Tuckahoe, Briarcliff, Brewster, and Pleasantville.

Carugan explained that, before the store placed orders for school supplies, Bill Stroud, the store's buyer, met with the PTA and teachers for each grade.  Teachers submitted their wish lists and worked with Stroud on the availability of desired supplies for each packet.  In turn, Stroud worked with the store's suppliers to procure the items requested by the teachers.

"It's quite a process to put the packets together," Carugan said.  "It takes our employees a lot of hours to assemble them."

The most popular item by far is the folder.  "We order lots of folders of all colors," Carugan said.  "Some teachers like to color-code subjects with matching folders and notebooks.  They like green notebooks and folders for science, for example."

He explained that school packets can vary depending on whether a student studies Spanish, French, or Latin.  He also pointed out that supplies are assembled according to gender.  "There are certain colors and themes that are appropriate for boys and others for girls, and we want everyone to be happy."

For the younger grades, the number-one item is crayons.  Teachers in those grades also request that their packets include antibacterial wipes and boxes of tissues.

"We'll have a special station set up in the store where students and their parents can pick up the supplies," said Carugan.
