Oct. 15, 2020: John James Valmas Sr. passed away Sunday, October 11, 2020, in Wedowee, Albama. Survivors include his daughter, Suzanne McNeil (Roger) of Wedowee; son, John J. Valmas, Jr. of Boston, MA; grandchildren, Alyssa Valmas, Aubrey Valmas, and Daniel Valmas; great grandchildren, Dominic and Conner; and sister, Emily Papageorge of Bronxville, NY.
A native of Bronxville, NY, Mr. Valmas was born on November 9, 1933, in Yonkers, NY, the son of James Valmas and Mary Andronico Valmas. He attended the Bronxville School kindergarten through 12th grade and graduated in 1951.
He was regarded as the best athlete in the class and was the only one to go on in professional sports. He was a pitcher for the Washington Senators Minor League system for many years before becoming an insurance agent with State Farm. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, the Leewood Country Club, and the Dunedin Country Club.
He was also a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in New Rochelle, NY. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He resided for most of his life and until recently in Bronxville.
Most of all, he loved and cherished his family. He was a wonderful and loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Anna Faye Valmas. Memorials may be floral, or donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Graveside services for John James "Joe" Valmas, Sr., age 86, of Dunedin, FL, were held on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at 11:00 AM at Wedowee City Cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
