June 20, 2012: Florence Curran Andruss (Flo) died peacefully at home in Bronxville on June 19, 2012. She is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Bill, in 1994 and is survived by her son, William E. Andruss Jr. (Rebecca) of Greenwich, CT, and two daughters, Annette C. Andruss of Charlestown, MA, and Florence A. Abbott (Peter) of San Diego, CA.
Flo was born on February 8, 1924, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Cecilia Hogan and Cornelius P. Curran. She graduated with honors from Villa Duchesne and attended Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York.
After college, she returned to St. Louis and was very involved with the Service Wives Center, which found housing for families of loved ones going overseas. In addition, she worked for the Red Cross purchasing occupational supplies for two Veteran Hospitals. For this work, she received a commendation medal from President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
In 1951, she married William Edgar Andruss in St. Louis, Missouri, and moved to Bronxville where she became very active in the community. She was a member of The Junior League for over 50 years, she volunteered at The Woman's Exchange, and she was on the board of Miss Covington's Dancing School.
In addition, she spent several years volunteering for various mental health organizations. At the time of her death, she had resided in Bronxville for over 61 years.
Calling hours will be held at the Fred H. McGrath & Son Funeral Home between the hours of 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm Thursday, June 21. Funeral Services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center or Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester.
