Thomas A. Wolff, Bronxville's 'Diligent Citizen,' Dies Suddenly Sunday, November 17, 2013; Memorial Service Saturday, November 23

Nov. 20, 2013:  Longtime Bronxville resident and graduate of the Bronxville Class of 1962 Thomas A. Wolff died suddenly on November 17, 2013.

According to the Bronxville Police Department the cause of death is still to be determined by the Westchester medical examiner, although it is believed to be of natural causes.

Mr. Wolff, while not widely recognized  to many Bronxvillians, was well known, in particular,  to two groups of Bronxville resident:  members of The Reformed Church of Bronxville and elected and appointed officials serving on Bronxville village boards and commissions.

For over 40 years, Mr. Wolff was an usher at The Reformed Church, serving as captain of the ushers for many years. Besides ushering at Sunday services, he could be seen at many memorial services assisting families and friends to their seats and making sure reserved areas were marked and observed. Always formal and courteous, he was a stickler for doing things right.

Mr. Wolff is known to Bronxville elected and appointed officials because he attended, with rare exceptions, the monthly meetings of the Bronxville Village Board of Trustees, the Bronxville Board of Education, the Bronxville Planning Board, the Bronxville Zoning Board, and the Eastchester Fire Board. Arriving with well- prepared written questions to ask, he would walk to the microphone to address board members,  raising questions that had been well-researched in advance.

Robert Riggs, who served as Bronxville village attorney and a village trustee, described him as our "diligent citizen." He was dedicated to the governing bodies of the community and vigilant in his oversight of them.

Carol Bartold, who is senior reporter for MyhometownBronxville and often saw Tom at board meetings, had this to say: "I would describe him as a 'community activist,' which he was, but to me he was the conscience of the village. He was informed on issues and the mechanics of issues; he was ethical, he cared about doing the right thing in every instance, and he held himself, as well as village officials, accountable."

Bronxville classmate Gaylord Hitchcock, on learning of Mr. Wolff's death, wrote in an email: "How sad! Tom was a unique, wonderful, and highly intelligent guy."

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 23, at 11:00 am at The Reformed Church of Bronxville.
