Jan. 29, 2014: Joan Templeton Scott of Bronxville passed away on January 15, 2014, at the age of 86.
In her final weeks and moments, Joanie was in her home and surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom were able to spend time with her in her final weeks. Joanie was known for her thoughtfulness, generosity, curiosity, and her ability to build and maintain deep friendships.
Joanie was born on November 23, 1927, in Lake Forest, Illinois, to Catherine and Stuart Templeton, the younger sister to a brother, Johnny, who died in 1994. She graduated from Garrison Forest School in Baltimore in 1946 and Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York, in 1950.
In 1951 she married John Gerard Scott, originally from St. Louis, and together they moved first to Tarrytown and then to Bronxville in 1954.
As she raised her eight children, Joanie was very active in the Bronxville and St. Joseph's Church communities. She was a member of the Junior League and volunteered for Lawrence Hospital and various mental health and senior-care organizations.
Until right before her death, Joanie remained active with her bridge, book, and garden clubs and revered her "birthday club," a lunch gathering of friends from St. Joseph's that celebrated each other's birthdays. She also loved dinners out with her many friends, going to Siwanoy Country Club and area restaurants regularly. At the time of her death, she had lived in Bronxville for 60 years.
Joanie and her family enjoyed summers at her family home on Lake Michigan in South Haven, Michigan. It is here that she relished time with her many cousins and their children, who vacationed in neighboring homes. "Aunt Joanie" was beloved by many cousins who treasured and shared her deep devotion to our homes on the lake and how they brought our family all together.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John, who died in 2001, and is survived by her children, John, Jim (Sheri), Bill (Katie O'), Katie, Anne, Mary, Stuart (Teresa), and Tom. Joanie is also survived by ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who, together with her children, were her most heartfelt source of joy and pride and gave her much happiness.
A funeral mass was held on January 18, 2014, at St. Joseph's Church, and she was buried next to her husband, John, at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 20, 2014.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jansen Hospice and Palliative Care, 670 White Plains Road, Scarsdale, NY 10583.
