Sep. 2, 2015: Former Bronxville Resident Solveig Hansen died on June 9, 2015. She was 70 years old at the time of her death.
An educator and visionary in after-school child care, she died peacefully after a prolonged illness in her home country of Denmark.
Solveig spent portions of many joyous years residing in Bronxville with her loving family.
Educated in the 80s at the University of Odense in Denmark, she became a K-3rd-grade teacher. Recognizing a need in her community for an after-school homework/tutoring and child Care center, she led the way in converting an out-of-service train car into a classroom. At the time, her program was widely considered innovative, resourceful, and progressive.
Solveig is survived by her beloved daughter, Anja Cooney, her son-in-law, Jeffrey Cooney, two grandchildren, George and Nicholas, her mother, Ruth, brothers Soren Hansen, Paul Hansen, and Peter Hansen, sisters-in-law Sus and Mette, and many nieces and nephews.
