May 6, 2020: For more than 50 years, Jerome Haims was a respected leader in the New York City real estate community. Jerry founded his own real estate appraisal and consulting company, Jerome Haims Realty, Inc., in 1968 and established himself as a sought-after consultant and advisor to a broad range of private, corporate, and banking clients, as well as public entities. Prior to forming his own real estate appraisal company, he was a Vice President at Abbot & Adams, Inc. and Abbot & Adams Appraisal Company, Inc. 

Jerry was a long-time member of the Real Estate Board of New York and achieved the MAI, SRA, and SREA professional designations from the Appraisal Institute. He was also a member of the Counselors of Real Estate (CRE), a fellow of the Royal Institution of Charter Surveyors (FRICS), and a member of the American Arbitration Association and the Urban Land Institute. 

Jerry was a valued member of these groups, serving as President of the Metro New York Appraisal Institute Chapter in 1983 and twice awarded the Chapter's "Person of the Year Award." He also served on the regional and national levels of the Institute and, in 2015, Jerry received the Appraisal Institute's National "Lifetime Achievement Award."

Jerry was a pre-eminent real estate valuation expert and testified regularly as an expert witness in condemnation cases and other valuation disputes. Well-regarded for his even-handed manner, he also frequently served as an arbitrator in real estate arbitrations.

Jerry passed away on April 28, 2020 due to complications from a stroke at the age of 86. Born in the Bronx, Jerry later moved to Manhattan with his parents, George and Celia Haims, his older brother, Irwin, and his younger sister Dorothy. 

As a young man, Jerry worked at his parent's store, The Salad Bowl, after school. He was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School and New York University, achieving a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, with a Music Theory minor in 1955. While attending NYU's Heights Campus in the Bronx, Jerry ran track competing in the 100- and 200-meter hurdles and competed in the Millrose Games in the 1950s.

In 1962, Jerry married Endrea Dicso, and they were married for 53-years before she passed away in February 2015 from Parkinson's Disease. Long-time residents of Greenwich Village, Jerry and Endrea were season ticket holders at both the New York Philharmonic and the New York Metropolitan Opera and enjoyed spending time at their summer home on Upton Lake in Clinton Corners, New York.

Jerry is survived by his son Eric and his wife Charlotte of Bronxville, New York, and his three grandchildren, Celia, John (Jack), and Ruthanne (Ruthie).

At this time, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a private immediate family burial will be held on Thursday, April 30, at Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus, NJ. A memorial service to celebrate Jerry's life will be held at a later date.
