Annual Brendan Gill Lecture This Friday April 29th to Feature Philanthropist and Best-Selling Author

April 27, 2022: Renowned pioneer of “patriotic philanthropy” and himself a leading donor to major cultural institutions as well as a bestselling author, David M. Rubenstein will be the featured speaker at the Annual Brendan Gill Lecture on Friday, April 29, at 8 pm at Sarah Lawrence's Barbara Walters Campus Center. He focuses on the evolution of the American story and his quest to preserve for our citizenry many of the important icons of our nation’s history.
This free lecture is open to the public and presented each year by The Bronxville Historical Conservancy as a gift to the community. A reception with the speaker will follow the presentation. Rubenstein joins an illustrious roster of previous Gill speakers, including Mo Rocca, Jill Lepore, Douglas Brinkley, the late Cokie Roberts, Jon Meacham, and Michael Beschloss, among others.
Mr. Rubenstein is Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of The Carlyle Group, one of the world’s largest and most successful private investment firms. Established in 1987, Carlyle now manages $301 billion from 26 offices around the world.
Mr. Rubenstein is Chairman of the Boards of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Council on Foreign Relations, the National Gallery of Art, and the Economic Club of Washington. He serves on many other boards and is a Fellow of the Harvard Corporation. A leader in the area of Patriotic Philanthropy, he has made transformative gifts for the restoration or repair of the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Monticello, Montpelier, Mount Vernon, Arlington House, Iwo Jima Memorial, the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, the National Archives, the National Zoo, the Library of Congress, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. He has also provided to the U.S. government long-term loans of his rare copies of the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Emancipation Proclamation, the 13th Amendment, the first map of the U.S. (Abel Buell map), and the first book printed in the U.S. (Bay Psalm Book).
Finally, Mr. Rubenstein is an original signer of The Giving Pledge, a promise that he will designate a significant portion of his assets to philanthropy. He is host of The David Rubenstein Show and Bloomberg Wealth with David Rubenstein; and the author of the bestselling The American Story, How to Lead, and The American Experiment which Publishers Weekly praised as “a rewarding survey of what makes America tick.”

Organized in 1982, the Bronxville Beautification Council (BBC) is a not-for-profit organization administered by a volunteer Board of Directors. The mission of the BBC is to enhance and maintain the natural and man-made beauty of the village of Bronxville, with an emphasis on the downtown business district.

Boulder Ledge Garden Club
Founded in 1966, the Boulder Ledge Garden Club is rooted in a mission to inspire a deeper appreciation and love for gardening and flower arranging. The club is dedicated to fostering and promoting interest and knowledge in gardening.
The Club maintains Bronxville’s Bicentennial Park and other civic gardens. In 2019–2020 the club raised $18,000 to replace trees in the village, reflecting its active role in community beautification. It also holds garden therapy projects and educational garden trips for members.

Bronxville Giving Garden
The Bronxville Giving Garden is a community-centered garden that donates organic produce to Eastchester Community Action Partnership in Tuckahoe and Community Service Associates in Mount Vernon. The garden is also a gathering place where school children and volunteers can discover the joy of tending plants and growing food.

Bronxville Green Committee
The Bronxville Green Committee is a volunteer organization that is part of the Village of Bronxville. It proposes and implements environmentally sustainable programs in our community.

Bronxville Boy Scouts
The village of Bronxville has a long tradition of scouting. “The troops and packs of Bronxville have maintained the finest scouting organizations and have taught the boys of the Bronxville area to be leaders and outstanding members of the local, national and global communities.”

Inspired by the highly successful Bronxville Centennial Celebration in 1998, the Bronxville Historical Conservancy was founded to record and preserve Bronxville's history and life in the village today.
