David Westin Honoree at Rotary Club and Reformed Church Spring Gala Saturday, April 26

Mar. 19, 2014:  David Westin, a longtime resident of Bronxville and former president of ABC News, has been chosen by The Rotary Club of Bronxville and The Reformed Church of Bronxville to be honored with the club's community service award at their joint spring gala on Saturday, April 26, at Siwanoy Country Club. Net proceeds from the event will benefit their joint efforts to improve early childhood literacy in Nodine Hill, Yonkers.

As chairman of the board of Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE), Westin has been chosen for his dedication and commitment to improving educational opportunities for youth in Yonkers. In 2007, Westin co-founded, with three Westchester-area businessmen, the nonprofit Yonkers Partners in Education, where he now serves as chair.

YPIE represents a partnership among the private sector, the City of Yonkers, and the school board, working together to ensure that Yonkers public school students have the opportunity to complete successfully not only their high school curriculum but a post-secondary course of study that will prepare them for life.

Led by executive director Wendy Nadel, YPIE has grown to a staff of fifteen professionals, augmented by dozens of volunteers drawn from throughout the area.

Its programs include:

1.  Regular classes in seventh and eighth grades to increase awareness of the importance of post-secondary education.

2.  College and career centers staffed by YPIE in the high schools providing assistance for hundreds of Yonkers students as they choose the post-secondary alternatives best for them, apply for programs, and obtain financial aid.

3.  Subsidized tutoring for the SAT and "graduation coaches" assigned to individual Yonkers public school students to mentor them over the full course of their high school careers (from ninth through twelfth grades).

4.  Scholarship programs for Yonkers students selected on merit and intensive programs to follow Yonkers students after they have gone on to college to help them persist until successful completion of their studies.

In March, the National Association of School Boards presented its prestigious Magna Award to YPIE and the Yonkers public school system, finding that YPIE has created "outstanding programs that advance student learning and encourage community involvement in schools."

In addition, as chair of The Reformed Church of Bronxville Mission Council, Westin worked with the church's head of mission and the entire council to bring together the various efforts of The Reformed Church, other churches, and other civic organizations to address the range of needs of the Nodine Hill section of Yonkers.

Admission to the event is $130, which includes a $50 tax-deductible contribution. For additional information, please contact Doris Benson at 914-961-6554 or dwbenson1@verizon.net.
