Jan. 17, 2018:  MyhometownBronxville welcomes 2018 by taking a look back one last time at some of the most significant stories of 2017. Following is a list of the headlines of some of the most popular stories of 2017, together with the first few sentences of each story. The Bronxville community is very interested in each year’s senior class at The Bronxville School, and thus articles about their college plans and graduation are some of the most popular.

Bronxville High School Seniors Receive Acceptances from Over 150 Colleges and Universities; See List, by Staff  

Jun. 7, 2017:  Colleges have sent acceptances to members of The Bronxville High School's Class of 2017. Every Ivy League institution except Columbia has accepted students from the class. Prestigious public and private liberal arts colleges and research universities have also extended acceptances to Bronxville High School seniors.

Jul. 26, 2017: After receiving acceptances from colleges and universities from across the United States, Canada, and Europe, members of Bronxville High School's Class of 2017 have decided where they will continue their education. As reported by Anne Abbatecola, director of counseling at Bronxville High School, graduates will attend colleges throughout the country, including Ivy League schools, other top national universities, and top liberal arts colleges.

Jun. 21, 2017: Although an afternoon of steady rain threatened to move Bronxville High School's 95th annual commencement indoors, showers subsided in time for one hundred thirteen members of the Class of 2017 to enjoy the tradition of receiving their diplomas at the steps of The Bronxville School. Family members and friends gathered on the school's front lawn on Saturday evening, June 17, to enjoy the ceremony and celebrate the seniors' graduation.

The school is central to the community, and stories about its campus attract a large readership. Last year saw concerns about possible contamination, tension about the recent renovations, and plans for future capital improvements.

Village Trustees Discuss Soil and Groundwater Contamination on School Campus, by Carol P. Bartold, Senior Reporter

Mar. 15, 2017:  A few hours ahead of a state of emergency, declared in advance of a predicted blizzard, the Bronxville Board of Trustees convened on March 13 for its regular workshop and meeting. . . . In other business, [Mayor] Marvin reported that independent environmental consultant Ecosystems Strategies, Inc. has issued a review of water and soil testing results conducted at The Bronxville School by Omega Environmental Services, Inc. The village hired Ecosystems in February primarily to help trustees understand, evaluate, and interpret testing results and data relating to the proposed Marriott Hotel site on Marbledale Road in Tuckahoe.

Use of Former Kickball Area for Parking Sparks Disagreement Between Bronxville School Constituents, by Carol P. Bartold, Senior Reporter    

Nov. 29, 2017: On the heels of receiving a thank-you for improving staff parking at The Bronxville School, the Bronxville Board of Education fielded criticism for ignoring the 2015 mandate of voters to maintain the kickball field rather than repurposing it to accommodate cars.

Bronxville School to Pursue $24 Million in Capital Improvements Without Increase in Tax Levy, by Carol P. Bartold, Senior Reporter

Oct. 25, 2017: A near-100-year-old building combined with the upcoming retirement of approximately $24 million in debt has prompted the Bronxville Board of Education and the school administration to examine a bond referendum to fund its next round of capital improvements to the school.

Stories about politics on the village, county, and national levels were very popular among the readers. Village issues included the election of village trustees, which last year saw a relatively unknown candidate, and the effect of tax reform on taxes. And always popular is the annual April Fools’ Day article, which last year focused on village matters.

Feb. 8, 2017:  Elizabeth Calderon, a Bronxville resident and an attorney, secured the Democratic nomination for Bronxville Village trustee at the caucus held on January 28, 2017. The vote was unanimously in favor of Ms. Calderon.

Mar. 15, 2017:  On Tuesday, March 21, Bronxville voters will decide which two of three contenders will win two-year terms on the village board of trustees. Republican incumbents Robert Underhill and Randolph Mayer face a challenge from Democrat and first-time candidate Elizabeth Calderon. 

Bronxville Residents Concerned about Tax Reform; Cannot Prepay 2018-19 Village Taxes, by Carol P. Bartold, Senior Reporter

Dec. 13, 2017: In anticipation of provisions of the tax reform bill that passed the United States House of Representatives in November and the Senate in December, many village property owners have expressed a desire to prepay their 2018-2019 property taxes.

Mayor Marvin to Make Bronxville Great Again, by Peter Clifford

Apr. 1, 2017:  Back in October of 2016, MyhometownBronxville published an article about the top ten most expensive villages in Westchester in terms of cost of living. Bronxville was ranked #8. When Mary Marvin saw this, she was incensed. . . . Happy April Fools’ Day!

On the county level, a Bronxville resident ran for county legislator, and George Latimer defeated incumbent Rob Astorino for county executive in a surprise upset.

May 24, 2017:  Small-business owner Ruth Walter will launch her campaign for county legislature with a campaign kickoff fundraiser at the Olde Stone Mill in Tuckahoe on May 31 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

George Latimer Defeats Rob Astorino to Win County Executive Race in Off-Year Election; Gordon Burrows, Anthony Colavita Re-Elected, by Carol P. Bartold, Senior Reporter    

Nov. 8, 2017:  High numbers of Westchester County voters braved the rain on Election Day yesterday to cast their ballots in several county and local races and to address three ballot proposals. State Senator George Latimer (D) won the hotly contested race for Westchester County executive with 117,767 votes, defeating incumbent Rob Astorino (R), who received 89,463 votes.

The 2016 presidential campaign captivated the country, and two articles about local involvement in the aftermath were very popular.

Bronxville Resident Rene Atayan Recounts Attending the Trump Inauguration—Firsthand, by Rene Atayan, Chair, Bronxville Republican Party

Feb. 1, 2017:  I had the good fortune to attend the inauguration of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. The New York Republican Party assembled a delegation, and in respect of Bronxville's long-standing support of GOP candidates in all elections, I was invited to participate. 

Bronxville Women Join Women's March in NYC, by Irena Choi Stern 

Jan. 25, 2017:  A group organized by Eleanor Gustafson, numbering more than two dozen women, boarded a Metro-North train on January 21 to join the NYC Women's March, which began at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza near the United Nations. It was just one of several Bronxville groups to take part in the march.

Bronxville is a beautiful village, and thus any news about threats to, or changes in, its infrastructure draws many readers.

Sinkhole Closes Section of Midland Avenue Across from Elementary School, by Staff

Feb. 1, 2017:  A flurry of emails from Bronxville Chief Christopher Satriale to Bronxville residents is keeping them informed of the status of the sinkhole that appeared on Midland Avenue on Sunday, January 29, across from the elementary school parking lot at the entrance to Library Lane.

Jul. 26, 2017:  Mayor Mary Marvin has reported that the appearance and condition of the Pondfield Road underpass at the Bronxville Metro-North Railroad Station became a topic of discussion at a recent meeting of the revived Retail Mix Committee.

MTA Seeks Commercial Tenant for Bronxville Train Station; Looks to Eliminate Longtime Coffee and Newsstand, by Carol P. Bartold, Senior Reporter 

May 3, 2017: Commuters at the Bronxville Metro-North Railroad station were met with the news that the coffee and newsstand, a fixture at the station since 1986, is due to be shut down in favor of a new tenant that would take over the bulk of the station building.

Bronxville is a safe community, and typical crimes tend to be minor infractions. When felonies occur in Bronxville, the readers’ interest is piqued.

Bronxville Police Blotter:  March 5 to March 19, 2017, by Bronxville Police Department 

Special Update on Previous Attempted Break-in:  After a five-month investigation, the Bronxville Police Department has charged two males from Yonkers, a 33-year-old and a 21-year-old, with Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree (class D felony) in connection with a 911 call in September. On September 21, 2016, at 9:06 am, the Bronxville Police Department received a 911 call from an elderly female residing on Fordal Road. The victim stated that two men had just pried open the rear door of her residence and attempted to gain entry before she heard the noise and confronted them, sending them fleeing in a dark-colored sedan.

Oct. 25, 2017: The Bronxville Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred on Sunday, October 22, at the Verizon store on Pondfield Road in Bronxville. Bronxville police personnel responded to the location immediately and there were no injuries as a result of the crime.
