Mary Turino, BHS '89, Places First in Jumping Tournament at Thunderbird Park, Vancouver

June 15, 2011:  Mary Turino, a 1989 graduate of Bronxville High School, was an avid rider during her formative years in Bronxville and always loved to jump.  A hiatus in riding during her college years and early job experiences ended with her move to Seattle in 2000, when she started to ride again.

Initially, she was given a cute but sluggish horse, and she decided to shop around.  She found Joey on the Internet and made an acceptable offer, subject to a vet's report.  Joey is in the direct line of War Admiral, the 1937 Triple Crown winner and son of the legendary Man 'o War, but his confirmation papers said "jumper," not "racer."  Since acquiring Joey, Turino has worked hard to develop him into a fine jumper.  Her remark was always, "Joey loves his work."

Recently she worked with a trainer, Patrick Billes, to iron out a few wrinkles in her technique.  He persuaded her to enter the Thunderbird Park Canadian Premier Show Jumping Tournament in Vancouver in May because he was convinced that she would be "very competitive" in this Class A horse show.  The field included horses in the $50,000 to $200,000 price range.

And "competitive" she was.  Mary took first place in the over 3'6' jump courses, which qualified her to enter the Open Jumper Classic.  In this final competition over 3'9" fences, she took first place, again, taking home prize money.

Needless to say, her parents, Bill and Mary Turino of Bronxville, her sister, Hope, and brother, David, eagerly awaited the results of her events.  On learning the good news, Mary (mother) said, "We are all very proud of this team of Joey and Mary, particularly since she did it all by herself without monetary support from us.  She is a woman with a passion which she has followed with excellent results. It brings to mind Joseph Campbell's mantra, 'follow your bliss.' "
