Baccalaureate for Class of 2011: Time to Reflect and Celebrate the Arts: See Photos

June 15, 2011:  Baccalaureate for the Bronxville graduating Class of 2011 was held at the Sommer Center at Concordia College on Sunday, June 12.  The traditional service, given each year on the Sunday before graduation, includes a celebration of the arts, providing seniors with one last chance to perform their instruments, display their artwork, sing their songs, and address their classmates before moving on to a new phase in life.

Charlie Diserens gave the welcoming address, establishing a mood of informality and joy, and had the audience responding in kind.  He passed the baton to Ryan Taras, who acted as MC for the rest of the performance.

This year's performance showcased an unusually strong class of vocal performers.  Selections ranged from "O Mio Babbino Caro" by Puccini, sung by Lydia Ciaputa, to a male rap a cappella trio (Ben Arcano, Jack Begert, and Henry Palermo) singing arrangements by Mario, Eminem, and Dido.

From the humor of "Taylor the Latte Boy," sung by Hannah Geiling, to the intensity of "Sozinho," sung in Portuguese by Renato Amboss and accompanied by John Timoney on guitar, the service showcased the polish and professionalism of all the performers.  Jonathan Faiman accompanied many of the performers with his usual sensitivity and support.

Classical musicians Daniel Levitz on piano (Chopin, Etude in C Minor) and Kay Kulason on the cello (Shostakovich, Sonata in D Minor) performed with poise and aplomb.  Brad Davies and Gregory Sargent (playing "American Patrol") interjected a welcome change of pace and a note of patriotism on the trumpet and trombone.

Bronxville teacher Chris Doyle was voted by the class to give the baccalaureate address.  He reminisced about meeting some of the current seniors when they were in sixth grade.  With some quotes from Teddy Roosevelt and Jimmy Stuart for inspiration, he spoke about not taking the easy route in life and running with the crowd when moral and conscience require otherwise.  He admonished, in the words of Tom Petty, "Don't back down."

Toward the end of the program John Gray and Alex Hartwell performed an original composition on electric guitar and drums followed by Karly Redpath and Molly Warnken, who sang "For Good" from the Broadway musical Wicked.  The song, about friendship and moving on, was both poignant and joyful, and there was more than one teary eye in the audience.

As a conclusion, the whole class joined together in an exuberant rendition of "Let It Be," by Paul McCartney.  Supported by piano, drums, and two electric guitars, the Class of 2011 exited singing together for the last time, applauded by an appreciative audience.

There was a reception following the performance where artwork of twelve graduating seniors was displayed.  The quality and depth of technique in these works showed the extraordinary talent and dedication these young artists have achieved.

We will miss them all and wish them well as they move on to college or other pursuits.
