Bronxville Boys’ Basketball Team Beats Rival Dobbs Ferry

Jan. 22, 2014:  Last Thursday, the Bronxville boys' varsity basketball team beat league rival Dobbs Ferry at home by a score of 52 to 33. After getting off to a slow start, the Broncos have won six of their last seven games, including big wins against Edgemont and Tuckahoe.

Because the Broncos graduated four starters last year--Matt Tormey, Luke Marrone, Dylan Murray, and Ned Carpenter--and lost senior co-captain Jack Connors to an injury before the start of the season, Coach Brian Senior was not surprised when his young team experienced a few growing pains. Even the coaching staff has new faces, with former Assistant Coach Justin Brucale currently coaching the modified team and new Assistant Coach Ben Martucci replacing him on the bench.

Though giving up size to many of their opponents, the Broncos excel at running the floor and have made team defense a focus. During the team's recent successful run, everyone has found a way to contribute. Junior captain Charlie Tarry, who has been the team's most consistent scorer, led the Broncos with 25 points against Dobbs Ferry, 18 against Edgemont, and 17 against Tuckahoe. Junior Michael Crawford has been solid at the point guard position and plays tenacious defense. Against Edgemont, Crawford had his best game of the season, scoring 12 points and shutting down Edgemont's top scorer.

Coming off of the bench, freshman Matt Toal has emerged as a capable ball handler at the point and as a very good shooter. Junior Brendan Walsh has also demonstrated an ability to score in big spurts, scoring 10 against Dobbs Ferry, and junior Tyler Schultz has been a reliable shooter all season.

On defense, junior Brendan Carty has stepped into the shoes of graduated defensive specialist Luke Marrone, who is currently playing football at Brown University. Carty is an emotional leader and also leads the team in charges drawn. Senior Liam Aherne, the Broncos' "big man," has been effective at both rebounding and scoring in the paint.

After losing a close game at Dobbs Ferry earlier in the season, the Broncos were hungry for a win at home in the rematch. They jumped out to a big early lead, thanks in part to the efforts of their "sixth man," the creative and raucous Bronxville student section. The student supporters, many of whom are seniors, turned out in full force and in costume for the occasion. After remaining completely silent for the first minutes of the game, they erupted when the Broncos scored their sixth point, doing their best to create a home court advantage for the Broncos. They brandished "fatheads" of local celebrities, including Vice Principal Marcellus Lessane, Assistant Coach Aaron Seiden, and students Claire Sargent and Paul Austi.

Senior John Flannery, dressed up as a dairy cow, continued the Bronxville tradition of enlightening the crowd with random facts, and senior Jack DePaul, in full Harry Potter regalia, cast Hogwarts spells at the opposing players. After the game, Coach Senior asked the team to thank the fans for their support, commenting that it was one of the funniest things he had ever seen.

The Broncos play next on Wednesday, January 22, at home at 6:00 pm and again on Saturday at Westlake at 3:00 pm.

Go Broncos.
