Bronxville School Auditorium Closes in Style with Musical 'Crazy for You'; See Photos

Feb. 12, 2014:  With The Bronxville School's auditorium set soon to be closed for renovations, high school students performed in great style the Gershwins' Crazy for You to a full house and standing ovation on Saturday night.

Each of the cast's three shows drew successively larger audiences. Thursday night's highlight was the opportunity for elementary students to mingle with cast members and obtain autographs following the performance. The younger students seemed to enjoy the show as much as senior citizens from the community who attended in lieu of the customary open dress rehearsal, which was canceled this year because of the snow on Wednesday.

In fact, the cast overcame two snow days during the final week of preparations, rehearsing at an off-site location with volunteer "drama mamas" overseeing rehearsals.

The 40-plus-member cast was supported by a student crew (listed below) and a mostly student orchestra, with high school orchestra director Dr. Denise Lutter and high school band director Sharon Slote rehearsing the orchestra and band in advance of the production.

Student orchestra members included Elizabeth McGough (violin), John Kim (violin), Amanda Flower (viola), Gina Elbert (flute), Emma Berry (clarinet), Jak Magaud (bass clarinet), Silas White (euphonium), and Kyle Swanson, who performed on six instruments (flute, piccolo, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, clarinet, and jug), often switching from measure to measure throughout the performance. Denise Lutter played violin and Sharon Slote played trumpet, and professionals were hired to play keyboard (Jonathan Faiman), percussion (Mark Katsaounis), and bass (Phil Marino).

Crew members who worked on production, including building the set and preparing and running lighting, props, and scene shifts, included stage manager Josh Bothwell, John George Brakatselos, Abby Carter, Tim Caruso, Kevin Casperson, Stephen DavanGreg DiStefanoAllison Dowe, Luke Geiling, Julia Goldman, Adam Hamdy, Chad Lawrenz, Emma MacKinnonZane Rivera-Heinz, Tim Sullivan, Lea Tanenbaum, Kenny Taylor, R.J. Thomas, and James Tubridy. Kendall Beach assisted with costumes; Mandy Gersten was in charge of makeup, and Kathleen Conaton and Christina Kantzoglou assisted. Emma MacKinnon designed the logo used on the poster and t-shirts.

Helen Coope designed the choreography and taught the cast tap and jazz dancing. Pamela Simpson directed the musical aspects and conducted the performances.

As has become another tradition in Bronxville, Fabio's Hair Studio was on-site for all three performances and graciously donated staff time to style the hair of all cast members.

Director Peter Royal praised all of the generous community entities that came together to make the production possible: "It truly takes a community. We are so grateful to everyone who supports this school and our productions."
