Bronxville Freshman Natascha Puri and Her Team Win First Prize in Indian Bollywood Dance Competition

May 7, 2014:  Bronxville High School freshman Natascha Puri won first prize in an Indian Bollywood group dance competition called Naya Andaz, held on April 26, 2014, at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Bollywood dance is a mixture of various dance forms from Indian traditional moves to modern contemporary dance styles. It combines kathak, hip-hop, bhangra, jazz, and Indian folk dances with expressions to narrate a story, convey emotion, or simply to allow performers to have fun with foot-tapping music. It works on rhythm, alignment, moves, and expression and teaches performers confidence and teamwork, in addition to being a fantastic workout for participants.

The annual Naya Andaz competition started in 1992 and includes Indian classical and fusion dance schools in the tristate area. It provides dance schools and their students the opportunity to showcase their talent by dancing to popular Indian movie songs. The competition is sponsored by corporate and private firms, including Indian television companies and corporations: Air India, Indus American Bank, SAL Hospital, and Black Wireless.

The 2014 competition includes three categories: Juniors (ages 8 to14), Seniors (ages 14 to21), and Elite (all ages, including adults). This year, almost 450 students competed for Top Three performances and Best Costume in each category.

The competition was judged by Longinus Fernandes, the choreographer from the Hollywood movie Slumdog Millionaire, which was directed by Danny Boyle.

Natascha participated in the Senior category, representing the popular Arya Dance Academy, which is based in Parsippany, New Jersey. Her group and its six-minute dance performance won first prize for both Best Performance and Best Costume.

In preparation this year, Natascha underwent two months of rigorous practice, spending close to seven hours every Saturday in Parsippany being taught by some popular Bollywood choreographers. Closer to the competition, the practice sessions became more regular and Natascha had to commit to evening sessions that lasted four hours on the weekdays.

During the final week before the performance, she practiced close to 25 hours. But for Natascha, for whom Bollywood dancing has long been a great passion, the bruised knees and pulled muscles didn't hamper her dedication.

Natascha's parents have been fully supportive of the time and commuting needed to enable Natascha to participate. "We are extremely proud of Natascha. At the outset, we could see her commitment toward the competition and the practice sessions. On Saturday day, she danced superbly on stage with her group in front of a packed theatre of more than 1,500 people in the audience. She balanced her studies, other activities, and the seven-hour practice sessions very well."
