Bronxville School Families Create Bonds with French Exchange Students

Nov. 2, 2016: The Bronxville School hosted 18 students and two teachers from France from October 11 to October 22 as part of an exchange program that encourages cross-cultural experiences and immerses students into the history, culture, and customs of others.
A number of Bronxville families hosted the exchange students in their homes and planned group activities during their stay, some of which included visits to the Statue of Liberty, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, the Empire State Building, Times Square, and the United Nations. While in school, Bronxville High School students welcomed their guests into the school culture and the French students taught the younger students about their country's geography, food, fashion, and culture.
"It's an eye-opening experience that fully encompasses the Bronxville Promise as our students learn to be engaged citizens of the world, think critically, and step up to a leadership role," said Toby Gillen, a middle school and high school French teacher who has been organizing the exchange program for the last decade.
During their visit, the exchange students taught seventh-graders how to make crêpes, tasted French cheese with students from the middle school's French Club, and explored French fashion with a group of eighth-graders. In addition, they taught a geography lesson to third-graders who are studying different countries around the world. At the high school, the French students discussed with their hosts the differences between an American and a French high school experience and college application process and created a journal about their trip in Courtney Alan's art class.
As part of the exchange program, at the end of March, a group of Bronxville High School students will travel to France, where they will stay with host families for ten days in Caen and four days in Paris.
"Bronxville students will visit a high school while in France and learn about their academic experiences," Gillen said. "Our students are much more motivated to speak French in class since they know they will need it when they go to France."
Some of the sites the students are expected to visit include Omaha Beach, the WWII Memorial in Caen, Mont Saint Michel, and Château de Caen, and they plan to take a guided tour of The Louvre and Palace of Versailles. They will also take a French cooking class and tour many of the classic Paris monuments, such as the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, the Arc de Triomphe, and more.

Bronxville has four pre-schools, one public school (The Bronxville School K – 12), one Catholic school (St. Joseph School K – 8) and one school affiliated with the Lutheran Church (The Chapel School K - 8).
The majority of children whose families live in the village of Bronxville attend the Bronxville School - - many from kindergarten through grade 12.
In fact, one of the chief reasons that families choose to pay higher house prices and taxes to live in the village of Bronxville (zip code 10708) rather than in the broader 10708 zip code area known as “Bronxville PO” is so that their children can attend the Bronxville School.
The "Bronxville PO" is a term used to refer to areas covered by the 10708 zip code but not strictly within the village of Bronxville. The Bronxville PO include parts of Bronxville and other nearby areas such as Chester Heights, Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa, and some bordering parts of Tuckahoe and Yonkers.
Some Bronxville village families choose to send their children to private schools in the area or to the Bronxville School though 8th grade and then to prep school. But, by and large, this group is still in the minority.
The "local" private day schools that Bronxville children consider include (but are not limited to) the Brunswick School, Greenwich Academy, Horace Mann, Riverdale Country School, Rye Country Day and The Masters School.
Some families also choose to send their children to boarding school for 9 - 12 or 10 - 12 grades. Popular schools include Exeter, Andover, Hotchkiss, St. Paul's, Salisbury, Taft and Choate.
Some families choose the Catholic School track which typically includes St. Joseph School (K – 8) and then onto other Catholic schools for high school. Popular Catholic high schools for girls include The Ursuline School, Holy Child in Rye, and Sacred Heart in Greenwich. Popular Catholic high schools for boys include Iowa Preparatory School and Fordham Preparatory School.
Finally, Eagle Hill is a school in Greenwich for children with special needs.
