Mar. 1, 2017:  Seven Bronxville High School seniors--Samuel Arcano, Audrey Kim, Brian Kradjel, Margaret McKelvy, Ethan Reich, James Swartz, and Charles Vorbach--have been selected as finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The students advanced to the finals after each submitted a scholarship application, demonstrated an outstanding academic record, wrote an essay, and earned SAT scores that confirmed their high performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

"To be chosen as a National Merit Finalist is a significant accomplishment," Principal Ann Meyer said. "We are proud of the students who have received this distinction. It's incredible to have seven finalists within our Class of 2017.

The program began with 1.6 million students nationwide who took the qualifying test as juniors in 2015. Students with the highest scores were chosen to advance to the semifinals. The pool was further narrowed down to 15,000 finalists, who remain in the competition for 7,500 prestigious scholarships worth more than $33 million.

Scholarship winners will be selected based on a variety of criteria, including their academic record, two sets of test scores, a high school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the finalist's own essay.

National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring.
