By Priscilla R. Toomey

Oct. 11, 2017:  The Bronxville Adult School is offering several classes this month to help citizens to understand and stay informed about significant hot topics around the globe.

First up will be Mexico: Past, Present and Future, taught by Charles Maxwell, which will meet on Thursday, October 12, at 7:00 pm.

Next will be a three-part series titled Great Decisions: America's Global Affairs Discussion Program, organized by the 99-year-old Foreign Policy Association to raise awareness of US foreign policy and global issue.

The first class in the series is titled The Future of Europe: Coping with Crisis and will focus on the European Union in the aftermath of the Brexit vote and related topics such as terrorism, the lingering financial recession, and the refugee crisis. It will meet on Tuesday, October 17, at 7:00 pm.

The second class will be Prospects for Afghanistan and Pakistan on Tuesday, November 14, at 7:00 pm, and the third class will be Nuclear Security: The Enduring Challenge of Nuclear Weapons on Tuesday, December 12, at 7:00 pm. The series will be led by Betty Crowley, a social studies teacher at Eastchester High School and a Bronxville resident. One can register for just one or two topics or for the full series.

On Tuesday, October 24, at 7:00 pm, New York Times editorial board member and senior foreign policy writer Carol Giacomo will give a class titled Hot Topics in Foreign Policy. Very recently returned from a journalism trip to North Korea, Carol will also discuss issues related to Russia, Iran, Hungary, Myanmar, and other global hot spots. In her position on the Times editorial board, she has been advising presidents about issues of war and peace and has traveled more than a million miles with eight secretaries of state. Carol's fascinating presentation will be followed by a Q&A.

Bronxville Public Library

Bronxville Public Library

The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.

The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.

The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children.  All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
