Mar. 28, 2018:  Whether it's filmmaking, creative writing, social justice, or building assistive technology devices for children with disabilities, Sarah Lawrence College is offering a wide range of summer programs that will allow high school students to explore their interests and prepare for college.

Students can live on campus for most courses, offering them a taste of the college experience, or commute to classes, offering flexibility.

“At Sarah Lawrence, we offer immersive experiences that can be life-changing,’’ said Kody Trauger, director of professional and summer programs. “This year we have added an exciting new computer programming course in which students collaborate with children and therapists from a local pediatric center to develop prototypes of assistive technology devices. This is just one example of the unique residential and non-residential summer programs we offer.”

Summer programs are open to rising tenth-, eleventh-, and twelfth-graders. Residential students must be age 15 or older at the start of the program. To learn about costs, schedules, and housing options visit our website.

Code Community: An Assistive Technology Intensive: July 15–August 3, 2018

Students will learn coding and hardware design to make their own assistive technology device in just three weeks. Students will visit the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center, a residential care center for children with disabilities and medically complex needs. There they will learn firsthand the challenges that children face so they can more effectively design adapted devices to increase accessibility to toys, games, and other objects used daily. Read more.

Writer’s Week: July 2–7, 2018

Directed by distinguished faculty members, this program lets high school students explore creative writing in a non-competitive and non-judgmental environment that values the risks and adventure of the creative process. Each day, participants attend fiction, poetry, and theater workshops led by prose writers, poets, and performance artists. The program also includes faculty and student readings and a celebration of student work on the final day. Read more. 

Social Justice Collective: July 15–August 3, 2018

This program provides students theoretical, historical, and present-day perspectives on social justice issues involving class, gender, sexuality, and race. This interdisciplinary intensive will give students a chance to learn, discuss, and apply their knowledge of the social justice issues that matter most to them. Students will create films, photographs, writing, performance pieces, and more in response to these issues. The program will culminate in an exhibition of each student’s work. Read more.

Filmmakers Collective: July 1–August 3, 2018

As part of a long-running partnership, Sarah Lawrence College and the International Film Institute of New York offer a unique opportunity to learn storytelling and develop the skill sets necessary to translate the written page onto the screen. Every student will produce and direct their own four- to six-minute film. In small classes, students will learn everything from operating cameras to setting up lights to capturing sound. Read more.

Writer’s Village: A Creative Writing Intensive: July 15–August 3, 2018

Students will participate in fiction and poetry workshops led by members and guests of Sarah Lawrence’s celebrated writing faculty. Readings, craft talks, and free writing periods supplement learning in the classroom. Students work alongside instructors to generate new work and improve each other’s writing. Together, students produce an anthology of work created in the program and form lasting artistic connections. Read more.
