Sarah Lawrence College Awarded $2 Million Grant by NYS toward Construction of New Campus Center

Jul. 4, 2018: Sarah Lawrence College has been awarded a $2 million grant from New York State’s Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program (HECap) that will support construction of the college’s Barbara Walters Campus Center.

Currently under construction, the $35 million Barbara Walters Campus Center is a donor-funded project driven by a lead gift of $15 million from one of the college’s most notable alumnae, renowned journalist Barbara Walters. Upon its opening in 2019, the center will boast ample, flexible spaces for gathering and connection and will serve as a magnet for intellectual, cultural, and social life on Sarah Lawrence’s 40-acre campus. A thoughtfully designed building with a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility, the center will also be a “front door” to the college, welcoming neighbors from the community to share cultural experiences.

“We are thrilled and grateful to be awarded this grant, and I extend my thanks on behalf of the college to Governor Cuomo, our local government leaders, and the HECap Board,” said Sarah Lawrence president Cristle Collins Judd. “We see this as a recognition by New York State of the substantial value this campus center will have not only for our community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, but also for our neighbors in Bronxville, Yonkers, and greater Westchester County.”

Established in 2005, the HECap Program provides matching capital grants to finance capital projects and equipment purchases by independent institutions of higher learning in New York State “that would enhance the programmatic offerings or the student life at the college or provide economic development benefits to the area surrounding such college campus.”

Bronxville Public Library

Bronxville Public Library

The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.

The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.

The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children.  All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
