Oct. 16, 2019: On November 5, 2019, Bronxville residents will have the opportunity to vote for Westchester County Legislator as well as for candidates running in the Town of Eastchester and candidates running for judge positions in Westchester County.  A good resource for more information on these candidates is Vote411.

Westchester County Legislator (Term 2 years)

The Westchester County Legislator works to enact laws, adopt an annual budget, levy taxes, and initiate projects and programs in Westchester County. There are 17 Districts in Westchester County.

Bronxville is in District 15, which includes the Village of Bronxville and parts of the City of Yonkers, including some of the Bronxville Post Office area.

The candidates for Westchester County Legislator in District 15 are Gordon Burrows (Republican and incumbent) and Ruth Walter (Democrat).

Gordon Burrows

Gordon Burrows is a resident of Yonkers and has been Westchester County Legislator for the 15th District for the past 14 years.  Burrows also served on the Yonkers City Council for 10 years.  Burrows has practiced law for 33 years. He has five children and lives in the Colonial Heights section of Yonkers.

Burrows sees the most important challenge going forward as "balancing the needs of our community against the cost to the taxpayer."  He further explains "It is extremely easy to support every project that crosses your desk however, the reality of funding the project year in and year out while balancing the annual cost to the taxpayer is the important challenge."

Another important issue for Burrows is to continue "to help mitigate and rectify the flooding issues in the southern areas of Westchester County that adversely affect the Village of Bronxville and the City of Yonkers"  As he explains, "Years of planning and setting funds aside are ready to be expended to address this critical issue and if reelected I will continue to dedicate energy toward implementing the goal."

Burrows graduated from Ithaca College and St. John's School of Law.

Ruth Walter

Ruth Walter, her husband, and two children have lived in District 15 for fourteen years and have owned and operated Dobbs & Bishop Fine Cheese in Bronxville for the past ten years.

Walter has experience in public service as both an official and volunteer. She served as a court clerk in the Village of Bronxville and as a Bronxville Library trustee.

One crucial issue for Walter is the environment. She has volunteered with the Bronxville River Conservancy to clean up single-use plastic and is very aware of "climate grief" among young people. She wants to be a champion for the environment across the County and "work to make it easier to switch to solar and geothermal."

Another critical issue for Walter is working to help small businesses.

Walter feels that she will bring fresh eyes, new ideas, and energy to the role of County Legislator.

Walter graduated from Princeton University and worked as an investment analyst for a multinational investment firm and in technology operations for several companies.

Bronxville Public Library

Bronxville Public Library

The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.

The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.

The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children.  All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
