Jan. 27, 2021: Concordia Conservatory and Stamford Symphony Orchestra will present a concert series for special learners. This new series, called the Unique Series, will debut with concerts at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 6 (elementary-age audiences) and Saturday, May 1 (middle and high school audiences). It will be broadcast for home viewing from Concordia Conservatory Stamford.
Created for learners with special needs and their families, the Unique Series is an interactive, 30-minute concert experience. Host Liz Ast, music therapy faculty at Concordia Conservatory, will engage audiences with elements of music therapy set to accessible classics performed by Stamford Symphony musicians. The inaugural season’s theme, “Feeling Music, Feeling Strong,” will focus on tempo: moving to a variety of rhythms, audiences will explore the beat that keeps music – and our hearts – alive and flowing.
Elizabeth Lim-Dutton (violinist with the Stamford Symphony) serves as Artistic Director of the Unique Series, working with Kathleen Suss, Executive Director of Concordia Conservatory, and Nicolas Gonzalez, Director of Community Engagement and Education for the Stamford Symphony. Longtime Conservatory students Kathleen Moriarty and Lilly Slaughter serve as Series Ambassadors. The Unique Series is sponsored by Lone Pine Foundation, Inc.
Concordia Conservatory, which in 2019 incorporated the music and art therapy provider Arts for Healing, is well-versed in providing music therapy and its wealth of developmental benefits. The Conservatory currently provides weekly music and art therapy classes for the Stamford and Norwalk Public Schools, serving 375 students aged five to 18. This year, classes have been delivered remotely from the Conservatory’s broadcast studios in Stamford.
