Jan. 9, 2019: On December 29, 2018, at 3:27 pm, the Bronxville Police Department received calls about smoke coming from a building on Cedar Street in the area of Pondfield Road in Bronxville. Bronxville Police Officers Cavallo and Kaiser went to the scene and reported that smoke appeared to be coming from Hunan Chinese Restaurant at 6 Cedar Street.
60 Control, which is the county dispatch center for the fire department, was notified and dispatched the Eastchester Fire Department to the location. Officer Cavallo closed Cedar Street to vehicular and pedestrian traffic and cleared the surrounding buildings.
The Eastchester Fire Department arrived within three minutes of the alarm. According to the fire department report, fourteen personnel responded. On arrival, the firefighters found fire in a large cooking oven with extension into the ductwork up to the roof. The "heat source" for the fire was described as "heat from powered equipment." The fire was confined to the room and the Eastchester Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire. Fire Chief Tween contacted the Westchester County Department of Health and the owner was advised not to open business until the health department inspected the premises.
Bronxville Sergeant DeYoung reported that all is now "in order" at the location and the restaurant has reopened for business.
