Highlights of Bronxville School Board of Education October Meeting

By Bronxville Board of Education
Nov. 12, 2025: Below is a summary of the Bronxville Board of Education meeting on October 16, 2025.
The meeting covered student programs, enrollment updates, the independent financial statement audit, and several operational and financial items.
Educational Programs and Enrollment
The Superintendent and Board honored all involved in a successful Homecoming week, noting the K-12 celebrations and the highlight of the week, high school student athletes greeting elementary students as they arrived at school each morning.
Middle School Principal, Joe Mercora and School Counselors, Samantha Mazo and Tim Nelson presented the Ambassadors Program as the Bronxville Promise in Action portion of the meeting. This student-led program, which originated with current Juniors, focuses on helping 5th graders transition to middle school by offering tours, workshops, and pre-transition activities, such as handing out locks before the summer for practice. The program aims to cultivate leadership and develop essential habits.
The class size and enrollment report showed a total enrollment of 1,550 students as of October 1st, which is approximately 30 students lower than projected. Kindergarten enrollment, specifically, was lower than anticipated (85 students compared to 98 the prior year).
Financial Actions and Audit Review
The Board received the independent financial statement audit from the Bonadio Group. The auditors provided an unmodified opinion—their highest level of assurance—on both the financial statements and the extra classroom financial statements. Key financial figures included a general fund balance of $14.4 million. The only comment in the management letter concerned insufficient support to verify receipts for extra classroom activities, a common finding in school districts.
The Board conditionally approved the audit, pending clarification on updating language in Note 12 regarding a change in the Other Post-Employment Benefit (OPEB) plan for employees hired after June 2024 concerning Medicare Part B reimbursement
The Board approved the personnel agenda, which largely involved resolutions for teacher overages (additional teaching assignments, typically for electives).
A review of five-year financial projections shows expected deficits beginning with the 2026-27 year into 2027-28, when debt service from the new capital project is expected to come on line. The five-year projections assume a property tax cap of about 2%, no personnel headcount growth, and a reduced rate of growth in health insurance and private school transportation costs. The Board and Leadership Team will continue to look for cost-reduction opportunities in order to help close deficits and minimize future tax increases.
The Board approved two annual contracts, including $94K to A. Bulfamante for landscaping services and $81K to Thermo Dynamics for HVAC maintenance.
Operational and Facilities
Items included approving overnight trips, such as the baseball team going to Disney World in March for spring training.
Initial probing results from the D-Wing exterior facade came back favorable but more investigative work still needs to be done in the lead up to the capital project. We are still hoping for a July 2026 start.
Leadership announced the exploration of potentially lighting the two school fields due to the expansion of athletic teams, lack of alternate field space, advancements in LED technology, and rising community interest. Scheduling has become increasingly difficult and games and practices get cut short. Community input will be sought so there will be ample opportunity to share our findings and to hear feedback.
