Below are highlights from this very special event.
Bronxville School Senior Class President Spoke About the Power of Kindness
Bronxville School Senior Class President Evelyn Henningson thanked parents, siblings, teachers, staff, and friends. She spoke about learning about kindness starting in elementary school and how kindness "resurfaced" when competition reached its peak in high school. She talked about how the kindness of one of her teachers helped her persevere in a challenging class. She also found kindness among her classmates in that challenging class. She thanked families, teachers, and coaches who "worked tirelessly" to support their children. She said that now it's "our turn" to make kindness a legacy that "we leave behind." She said, "we have the opportunity to choose empathy." She further said that acting kindly "ensures we all succeed."
Bronxville School SFL President Spoke About Being the Best that You Can Be
Bronxville School President of the Student Faculty Legislature, Matthew McSherry, thanked "everyone who helped us get to this point." He talked about the uniqueness of each student and how he saw students working hard in academics, sports, and the arts. "We have aspiring scientists who are actors and talented athletes who are accomplished musicians," he said. He also talked about a speech by Martin Luther King, in which King spoke about being the best you could be. King said, "If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, then you must strive to be the best street sweeper that you can be." In this spirit, McSherry encouraged everyone to be individualistic, to work at what they are passionate about, and to be the best that they can be at whatever they decide to do.
Guest Speaker Christopher Palermo Spoke About the Future
The guest speaker this year was Chris Palermo (BHS '09). Palermo spoke about lessons that he has learned. He said, "You have a strong foundation from being at the Bronxville School that helped you build skills, character, and who you are becoming." He spoke about the importance of being "present." When you hear your graduate's name today, "go all out....let them hear you!" He also spoke about the future. He said it's ok if you don't know what you want to be. He talked about his journey and how his perspective on his career evolved. For him, teaching is challenging and fulfilling and allows him to play "some role" in "making the world a better place." He said that "you will find your way" and that he hoped that everyone would find "their joy."
