Jun. 20, 2018: An impressive level of involvement and leadership on the Bronxville Board of Education are the hallmarks of board president Jeff Rohr's six-year tenure on the board, Jon Atkeson, board vice president, stated. After six years of service to The Bronxville School as a member of the board, Rohr presided over his final meeting on June 14.
During his tenure on the board, Rohr served on the audit, finance, and negotiations committees. He was also board liaison for The Bronxville School Foundation, the village, and staff development. Prior to becoming president two years ago, he served as board vice president.
"While Jeff's time on the board has been only six years, the impact of his efforts will be realized for many more," Atkeson noted. "And for this I am thankful."
Atkeson pointed out that Rohr's long-term legacy of commitment to the school and community will be his "laser focus" on keeping annual school budgets within the state-mandated two-percent tax levy cap. Facing the financial constraints imposed by the cap, which took effect during his terms on the board, Rohr was able to guide the board in fostering a robust and dynamic educational environment while keeping tax levy increases to an average annual rate of 1.4 percent. "Jeff has been a strong steward of the school's finances on behalf of all stakeholders," Atkeson said.
Rohr's six years on the board were marked by several significant decisions and events. He was involved in the negotiation and finalization of the current contract with the Bronxville Teachers' Association and the hiring of Superintendent Roy Montesano. He had a pivotal role in the formulation and passing of the recent $24.8 million bond referendum, which, according to Atkeson, will equip the school's facilities, some approaching 100 years old, to best educate students for the next 100 years.
"Jeff had been a valuable mentor to new board members as well as to our new superintendent," Atkeson said. "He helped usher in a more comprehensive and rigorous review of tenure candidates at the board level and set high expectations for the administration to shoot for in hiring."
"I have enjoyed it," Rohr said of his time serving on the board of education. "I think that anybody who joins the board wants the school to be better by the time they leave." He added that he is especially proud of the progress the school has made in academics, instituting technology, student awards and college acceptances, and new faculty hired.
Rohr praised the energy and leadership that the faculty has received from the school's administration, as well as the dedication of his fellow board members.
The Bronxville Board of Education will hold a reorganization meeting in July.
