Bronxville Adult School to Kick Off Fall Season with Courses Taught by Locals

By Sissel McCarthy, Member, Board of Trustees, Bronxville Adult School
Sep. 21, 2016: Anyone interested in learning more about art, blogging, or holiday entertaining will also get to know a Bronxville neighbor a bit better.
Several locals are teaching classes this fall through the Bronxville Adult School (BAS), including Kate Brewster-Duffy, the owner of Stillmeadow Gourmet, which opened a year ago on Pondfield Road. Brewster-Duffy is all about stress-free entertaining and will share her simple yet elegant recipes in her class Easy Holiday Entertaining Tricks.
"There are all these tricks like how to do things ahead of time so you can enjoy being with your guests," said Brewster-Duffy, who is a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef. Class will be held in Stillmeadow's kitchen, where she will demonstrate how to make cocktail party favorites like spiced nuts, baked brie, and homemade blinis with smoked salmon or caviar. Students will help prepare these tasty treats and get to eat them as well. No culinary expertise required.
Those more interested in a visual feast should check out Sue Koch's class, Five Artists' Moments Through Five Media. This class will introduce students to the work of artists ranging from Hieronymus Bosch and Yuichi Inoue to Pablo Picasso and will focus on five different mediums: ink, paint, paper, wood, and monoprint. The best part of this class, according to Koch, is that students will get some hands-on experience creating their own masterpieces in a particular medium each week. "People think you need a heavy background in art, but you don't have to have any knowledge or experience. Just bring your curiosity," said Koch, who has lived in Bronxville for more than 20 years and worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a graphic design manager.
Another local resident, Lee Huang, will help bloggers cash in on their online musings in his class, Five Ways to Make Money from your Blog or Website.
"More and more people are familiar with the concept of making money online but how to do it is an unknown," said Huang, who has his own blog at www.thecomicloud.com. Huang, who is a digital strategist and consultant, will share step-by-step instructions on how to monetize online content through ads, e-commerce, sponsorships, and commissions. Once these are in place, he says all you need is an audience to begin making money.
Bronxville Adult School classes are conveniently scheduled on weekdays, weeknights, and weekends. To find out more about the BAS course offerings and to register, go to the Bronxville Adult School website or contact the office at 914-793-4435 or
