Mar. 4, 2020: On Wednesday, March 11, at 7:00 pm, Concordia College’s Jacobson Global Lecture Series will feature Scott B. MacDonald, chief economist at Smith’s Research & Gradings, to present US-China Trade Relations in the Age of Disruption and Coronavirus.

MacDonald’s timely lecture will address recent stress in the U.S.-China relationship over trade, foreign investment, technology, and cyber-security, and also the decoupling of China and the U.S. and the impact that coronavirus may have on this relationship. 

With U.S. companies heavily invested in China, a massive supply chain linking our countries, tensions over cyber-hacking, and now the potential for a pandemic, MacDonald posits that the management of the Beijing-Washington relationship may be the biggest challenge facing us in the 21st century.  

Scott B. MacDonald is the chief economist at Smith’s Research & Gradings and Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Prior to that, he was the head of research at MC Asset Management LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, head of credit and economic research at Aladdin Capital Management in Stamford, Connecticut; and an international economic adviser in the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in Washington, D.C. 

McDonald is the author or editor of 18 books and numerous articles on economic affairs, covering events in the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and North America. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Connecticut, an M.A. in Asian studies from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, and a B.A. in history and political science from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.

For three decades, Concordia’s Jacobson Global Lecture Series has brought to distinguished campus speakers from diverse international fields, enlightening students, faculty, and the community at large.
